MICHAEL CRICHTON DEAD AT 66 "Michael Crichton, best known as the author of Jurassic Park and the creator of NBC's ER, has died. He was 66. In a statement to Entertainment Tonight, his family calls his death unexpected, but said he had been privately battling cancer."

We're Going Soft

The new and improved BritneySpears.com was just unveiled — complete with an awkward introductory video — so now the crazy Britney Spears fans (we're looking at you, Chris Crocker), can stalk her anytime they wish (not that it was difficult to do so in the first place). The site is full of videos, pictures and fan competitions — including some amateur potential Circus cover art. There's also some great grammar: "Brit was in Los Angeles doing some fun interviews for the site and the whole crew from Entertainment Tonight were outside the door in the next room waiting to talk to her!" Geniuses, those showbiz people.

Life Is Unfair

Poor Lynne Spears. The mother of two cash cows (Britney and Jamie Lynn) and one disappointment (non-celebrity Bryan) has had a tough go at it lately, what with Brit going insane and JL doing the whole teen pregnancy thing. But even worse than that, she has been crucified in the tabloid world for her horrible parenting skills. This is an issue, Lynne says, because the woman who is potentially "a heartbeat away" from the presidency has been applauded for being in a very similar situation:

It's a totally different reaction. It's as if [Sarah Palin] became celebrated. … Every woman in the world has applauded her strength and her convictions and poor little old Jamie Lynn—you saw how she was crucified. Everybody did, firsthand … I just feel like it's been a very hypocritical situation.

Now, we're not trying to defend Sarah Palin here, but the situations were a teensy weensy bit different: She didn't raise her child on a Hollywood set, and she didn't pimp out her issues to OK! magazine for a million dollars. That aside, Sarah actually did get quite a bit of criticism for having a pregnant teenager — but Lynne probably only watches Entertainment Tonight for her breaking news.

SHARON LOSES KID "Entertainment Tonight has obtained a court minute order confirming Sharon Stone has lost physical custody of her 8-year-old son Roan, despite her court pleas to change the arrangement."

Opinionated and Replaceable Is Not a Good Combination

Whoops! Just three days after sending everyone employed by TV rags The Insider and Entertainment Tonight a catty e-mail in which he called Insider host Lara Spencer out of touch and claimed she makes viewers want to "vomit," recovering addict Pat O'Brien is out on his ass. According to Page Six, O'Brien's bosses were "infuriated" by the missive.

O'Brien had been demoted from host to correspondent at The Insider following some time at rehab, apparently leaving him with some jealousy, resentment and anger issues. Shocking.

Time now for sad math: fired + bad attitude + recession = relapse

THAT'S ONE WAY OF PUTTING IT "Emotional stars like Oprah Winfrey and Kanye West had nothing but praise for Barack Obama's acceptance speech in Denver Thursday night. 'Just seeing him on stage, I cried my eyelashes off,' Winfrey told Entertainment Tonight backstage at Invesco Field."

IT RUNS IN THE FAMILY "Candy Spelling tells ET exclusively she's writing a book! 'It's true,' she says. 'I am close to signing a deal to write a book. But everyone should hold on. I have lots of stories I've never told, and they will all be in my book!'"

Trust Us, You Have Lots To Be Ashamed Of

The newest Lohan spawn, Ashley Kaufmann, made her first Entertainment Tonight appearance with her greedy mother by her side to talk about how much she hates her alleged father Michael. It's like watching Lindsay all over again, except way more annoying. Her mother claims she's so sorry for the way everything has played out — hence the reason they're pimping out their story to ET.

Bogus Info

pittjolie3.jpg

Entertainment Tonight did it! They finally did it! After weeks of refusing to retract their false report that Angelina Jolie had given birth to her twins, they’re owning up to the fact that they got it wrong.

Sort of!

None of this would’ve have been such a big deal if exec producer Linda Bell Blue admitted the bogus Internet rumor their story was based on was total bunk, but now it’s just an embarrassing stain on their, ahem, reputation.

Caught Pregnant-Bellied

intouchangpregnew

This week In Touch made Los Angeles Times blogger Liz Snead — who's been calling on Angelina Jolie to SHOW YOURSELF!!! – a very happy woman: At last, since Entertainment Tonight first falsely reported the superstar mom had given birth to her twins, there's photo evidence that … she hasn't.

nobabies

According to testimony obtained by the Associated Press, Entertainment Tonight, modern America's version of the stocks, knowingly aired a false report on Friday that claimed Angelina Jolie had given birth to twins. Anonymous sources with insider knowledge of the incident say that ET knew well before it broadcast the information that it had come from someone impersonating Jolie's assistant, but the decision was made to air it anyway. ET – of course – says the AP's information is bogus.

We don't care know who to believe, but kudos to the mystery performance artist(s?) making a mockery out of all the people getting excited over babies they'll never, ever see in real life.

JOSSIP REPORTS

How to explain how Entertainment Tonight so very badly bungled the EXCLUSIVE!!! story about Angelina Jolie giving birth last week? (And then their website "crashed"; maybe they were hiding from their screw up?)

Well, it wasn't entirely their fault.

Luckily, It's Not From TMZ

britneyhimym.jpg

The first video has been released of Britney's second How I Met Your Mother appearance. The hair, makeup and acting are all the same, so it's really nothing too compelling; ET, however, is almost too excited about this, and you can bet the show will have shown her entire performance in daily clips before the episode even airs.

heathledgerlawsuit

Because Heath Ledger simply cannot rest in peace, a lawsuit was filed today alleging the late actor was set up in 2006 by two photographers who offered him cocaine and secretly videotaped the exchange for profit. (Remember the little video that Entertainment Tonight promoted but never ran after Heath's death?)

The suit was filed by "Jane Doe," who was a freelance reporter for People at the time of the incident. Her then-boyfriend, Splash photographer Darren Banks, met up with Heath after the SAG awards and brought him to Doe's room at the Chateau Marmont.

Problem is, Heath wasn't aware that he was hanging out with Splash photogs, and they quickly offered him cocaine. After the men began snorting, one of the Splash guys left the room to secretly film Ledger from the room's balcony. Once Heath caught on to what was happening, he became angry but was assured the tape would be destroyed — except we obviously know it wasn't, because it was sold to Entertainment Tonight back in January for $200,000.

So why the lawsuit? Jane Doe is seeking unspecified damages on charges of fraud, intrusion, infliction of emotional distress and privacy violations because her voice is on the tape and she is afraid people will think she was doing coke. Because if anyone is the victim in all this, it's Jane Doe.

Hearing McCarthy

ledgerparty

A coalition of powerful celebrities like Natalie Portman and that girl from Juno may be behind Entertainment Tonight and The Insider's decision to not air a two-year-old video of the recently deceased Heath Ledger in a coke den at LA's Chateau Marmont.

A spokesperson for the shows confirmed that the full video will not air.

"Out of respect for Heath Ledger's family, 'Entertainment Tonight' and 'The Insider' have decided not to run the Heath Ledger video which has been circulating in the world media," a show spokesperson said in a statement.

Of course, in the past, both programs have eagerly shown offensive footage of the dead, including pictures of Princess Di's fatal car crash and a drugged-out Anna Nicole Smith in clown makeup; why stop now? Rumor has it they're being intimidated into submission with threats of no further interviews.
