Fashion Weak

Speaking of Fashion Week glamour, please behold the new trend for the upcoming season(s): The man skirt, or as I have dubbed it: The Mirt. Marc Jacobs has been seen sporting it more than once around the Bryant Park tents, and I have a feeling Cord is going to start wearing one of his own around Jossip headquarters. Mark my words, this is going to be huge.

Oh, Kirstie! Isn't life miserable? Couldn't you just collapse and die in your Daisy Dukes?

Fashion just gets her really excited

Every time you think Kate Moss has gotten her act together — broke up with Pete Doherty, sort-of admits to an eating disorder in Interview, has the world's largest gold statue made in her honor — she has to go eff it all up again by jumping on the catwalk, of all things:

Poor Little Rich Country

Call it exploitation, post-colonialism, or poor marketing, but the image seen here is actually part of a high-end fashion spread. The editorial layout, which features a toothless gent – identified only as "man" – who holds a $200 Burberry umbrella, is part of Vogue India's attempt to capitalize on the nation's growing middle class.

The mag's August issue featured not models, but "average" citizens, all unnamed, holding designer bags and couture items. Yes: Poor people wearing items they couldn't afford with the sale of both kidneys.

Taking a Stand

The Republicans are right: These goddamn celebrities just will not leave politics alone and go be celebrities! Look at this frickin' Alaskan governor, for instance, prancing about the pages of Vogue in ridiculously expensive winter wear. Is she for real? Earth to governor: You're a politician, lady, not Cindy Crawford!

See, this is exactly why I'm voting for McCain. Because he has made it well known that he is sick and tired of this horseshit. He's ready to take a stand against the ridiculous, flashy dog-and-pony show politics has…wait, what? What? Oh, for fuck's sake.

One more after the jump.

SHIRT HAPPENS The ultimate awful t-shirt, on a Polish youth just minutes ago in Brookyln's Greenpoint neighborhood: "Most Likely to Wear a Stupid T-Shirt." Meta! Horrible, but meta!

Ah, The Finger Guns

There's not a red carpet in Hollywood that Spencer Pratt and Heidi Montag would leave untouched, which would explain why the two felt the urge to attend some sort of Pepsi event last night at Avalon. You would think, however, that after attending so many pointless events Spencer would learn how to properly wear a suit. And perhaps Heidi could get her pants hemmed. Just a thought.

More pictures after the jump.

Little Girls Forced to Become Littler Girls

Kate Moss, seen here chopping up a big line of cocaine while her young daughter is…somewhere, is finally ready to admit that existence in an industry that judges people solely on their looks is a little bit twisted.

Fashion Week is nine days away, and before we awkwardly descend upon the tents once again, we decided to remind ourselves of the circus that's ahead. Thankfully, New York magazine did the work for us and compiled a list of 100 of the most hideous looks from the Fall 2008 shows. Our top pick is at left, but you can view the whole list here.

These Are My Sins

At left is the image that was emblazoned on the worst t-shirt I've ever owned. I just saw an awkward boy in the subway wearing it and I cringed at the thought that I once looked LIKE THAT.

I paid $10 to a street vendor for the boxy white thing when I was 14, and wore it only when my mother wasn't going to see me. I stopped wearing it completely after an English teacher I very much admired called me over after class one day, pointed at "Tom" and whispered, "This thing is very unbecoming on you."

What's the worst shirt you've ever owned?

When we think of politics, the first thing that comes to mind is fashion. And thank goodness celebrity handbag designer Timmy Woods created a piece representing Barack Obama and his campaign for the presidency. Ready to be impressed? The bag is made from Acacia Wood and is based on signs used by the Obama camp. Ooookay.

Woods said Michelle Obama will be the first taker, whether she likes it or not: "I hope she will get it in time to wear to [next week's] convention."

Oh RiRi

Rihanna stepped out in her finest Look At Me! shoes for a day of shopping on Melrose Avenue, because her "secret" relationship with Chris Brown is no longer discussion-worthy. How much did you pay for those, Ri? Cause if we're talking anything more than $10, you got taken for a ride.

I foolishly gave my e-mail address to an American Apparel store four years ago and now receive regular correspondence from the company reminding me things like "Summer's Back!" or "School's Here!" In the most recent message, this cluster of lithe bodies at left is described as a "Back to School look." Where these people matriculated I have no idea.

Elitists

Ralph Lauren is in trouble with the Internets. Some bloggers seem to think the designer's opening ceremony clothes for the US Olympians were offensive, heralding his iconic Polo horse more than the iconic Olympic rings. We say big deal. How this is any different than every other day in America in which corporations are triumphant over amateur dreamers? But Jeff Koopersmith at the American Politics Journal is outraged:

Of course, this is typically American: create something combining taste and quality, and then reduce it to rubble it by advertising where you bought it – and how much you paid.

In this case, however, Lauren has literally paid a high price – for the Olympic license to produce the American team’s replica togs. Olympics licenses cost a fortune.

Yet the IOC continues to portray the Olympiad as a “pure” sporting event celebrating the best athletes on earth - not a place for blundering materialism. This seems especially poignant given that the United States is closing in on its fourth quarter of recession and more family homes are being reposessed than bought.

I propose that along with drug testing labs, we have logo-testing experts who make certain the logos are hidden.

Adding insult to materialism, Lauren included with the outfits an instructional booklet on how to walk and speak in Polo clothing, thereby heading off the shame of his wares draping the plebeian skin of a gold-medalist who says he thinks he "did good" in his race.

And With Good Reason

Why do people insist on dressing animals in these godawful outfits and forcing them to walk down a runway — all in the name of charity? Surely there's a better way of going about raising money for homeless pets.
