"Nipplegate" Now Just "Nipple"

Four years after Janet Jackson’s infamous Super Bowl “wardrobe malfunction,” a federal appeals court ruled that the Federal Communications Commission “acted arbitrarily and capriciously” in issuing a $550,000 indecency fine to CBS. That's kind of an understatement.

GEORGE CARLIN WOULD BE PROUD "Viewer complaints about naughty programming dropped massively in the third quarter of 2007, according to the latest data from the Federal Communications Commission. While the second quarter of 2007 saw 4,368 complaints come into the agency, the following quarter logged a mere 368 — precisely 4,000 less. During the first quarter, nearly 150,000 complaints came in."

THIS NATION OF OURS "The Justice Department has taken on the role of the FCC’s enforcer, filing a lawsuit Friday against Fox and Sinclair Broadcast Group to collect $56,000 in fines levied in the long-running indecency case involving Fox reality skein 'Married by America.' The Justice Department’s unusual move came on the same day the FCC rejected Fox’s request for a review of the FCC’s most recent decision to fine a handful of Fox affiliates for carrying the sexually charged reality program in a timeslot in which the FCC has indecency enforcement authority."

Watch this and then get frustrated with how stupid and arbitrary Federal Communications Commission standards are. Here, the cast of SNL scream "so fucking" over and over again for the shock value, despite the fact that the FCC has fined the hell out of plenty of previous violators who dared say "fuck" outside of the context of wordplay.

Honestly, with this skit, people need to bombard the FCC with questions about exactly what their regulations are. Don't get me wrong, I loathe censorship and I've learned enough to know that swear words don't have a scientifically proven negative impact on children, but if the Commission doesn't fine SNL for this bit, it means that they've decided to be whimsical with their judgments, and that's a frightening trait for powerful offices to adopt.
