DEGENERES PUTS HER MONEY WHERE HER HEART IS "US talk show host Ellen DeGeneres has bought $100,000 of TV airtime to back gay marriage. The 50-year-old will urge Californians to vote to save the right to gay marriage during the state ballot in November, campaign organisers said. … Her TV advert will be screened in the run-up to the state ballot on 4 November."

It Ain't Easy Being Gay

Ellen DeGeneres has created a public service announcement imploring California's most virulent bigots to give it a rest for a while and vote no on Proposition 8, the ballot initiative to ban gay marriage. If the legislation passes, it could possibly nullify DeGeneres' August marriage to partner Portia de Rossi, thus hurting them both tremendously and permanently.

America: Where everyone has the right to publicly beg Bible-thumping lunatics to not hate them for who they are.

Video after the jump.

CONN COURT APPROVES GAY MARRIAGE! "The Connecticut Supreme Court today ruled that denying marriage rights to same-sex couples is unconstitutional. Connecticut is now poised to become the nation’s third state to allow same-sex marriage, joining California and Massachusetts. 'Interpreting our state constitutional provisions in accordance with firmly established equal protection principles leads inevitably to the conclusion that gay persons are entitled to marry the otherwise qualified same sex partner of their choice,' the ruling says. 'To decide otherwise would require us to apply one set of constitutional principles to gay persons and another to all others.'"

Irony, You Runny, We All Runny

A story in today's Telegraph about plans for the Pride Campus of Social Justice High School, what would be a "gay-friendly" high school in Chicago, is interesting, but not as interesting as the photograph chosen to accompany it. Click through for that.

Money Disappears

Less than a week after we noted that Pope Benedict XVI, who's looking mighty sad these days, should be doing things other than reading the Bible with celebrities for a week straight on Italian television, the pontiff heeded our call and expressed an almost Marxist sentiment at yesterday's meeting of over 200 bishops:

Benedict says that "now with the collapse of big banks we see that money disappears, is nothing and all these things that appear real are in fact of secondary importance." He urges those who build their lives "only on things that are visible, such as success, career, money" to keep that in mind.

How much you wanna bet most Catholics continue to ignore this one while running right along with the "gay unions are false" thing?

Gimme Some Money

Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi were recently wed in a very well-publicized ceremony in Beverly Hills. After that, DeGeneres took to her blog to decry California's Proposition 8, the constitutional amendment that would eliminate same sex couples' right to marry and could possibly nullify all the gay marriages that came before it.

Yet despite all the good she's done for gay rights in California, there's rumbling coming from other Proposition 8 opponents who say DeGeneres needs to contribute more. Specifically, Ellen has yet to send a big, fat check to the cause, and insiders say that that omission has the potential to hurt both Ellen and Prop 8 in the long run.

American No Longer Idle

People magazine has published online excerpts from their interview with the newly gay Clay Aiken.

Aiken, who for years denied his homosexuality, explains that he didn't mean to lie, but simply lacked the wherewithal to come clean. It wasn't until he had his own child, via in vitro fertilization, that Aiken says he realized he needed to tell the world: "It was the first decision I made as a father. I cannot raise a child to lie or to hide things. I wasn't raised that way, and I'm not going to raise a child to do that."

The born again Christian singer also reveals a bit about how his mother took the news. Here's a hint: not well.

LINDSAY LOHAN ON A RAMPAGE First a paparazzo, now Sarah Palin: "'I really cannot bite my tongue anymore when it comes to Sarah Palin,' the actress, 22, wrote on her MySpace blog Sunday. … Although Lohan said she feels 'it's necessary for me to clarify that I am not against Sarah Palin as a mother or woman', the star believes that Palin … isn't ready to run the country. She said, 'I find it quite interesting that a woman who now is running to be second in command of the United States, only 4 years ago had aspirations to be a television anchor, which is probably all she is qualified to be. Oh, and… Hint Hint Pali Pal - Don't pose for anymore tabloid covers, you're not a celebrity, you're running for office to represent our, your, my COUNTRY!' Lohan … also referenced Palin's views on homosexuality. 'Is it a sin to be gay?' Lohan asked. 'Should it be a sin to be straight? Or to use birth control? Or to have sex before marriage? Or even to have a child out of wedlock? Is our country so divided that the Republicans best hope is a narrow minded, media obsessed homophobe?'"

LIBERACE BIOPIC IN THE WORKS "Fresh off his sale of 'Che' to IFC Films, Steven Soderbergh has set his sights on directing a very different sort of biopic about Liberace, with Michael Douglas his first choice to play the flamboyant pianist, Variety reports. … Discussions are under way to cast Matt Damon as Scott Thorson, who sued Liberace for palimony, despite the glittery performer’s persistent denials that he was gay. Thorson settled his claim in 1986, and Liberace died in 1987 of complications due to AIDS."

Doesn't Want His Daughter Used, Of Course

Lindsay Lohan
's freak-sistah (not Ali) is getting a chance to tell her possibly-insightful story of growing up a real-life Tenenbaum. Samantha Ronson is in talks to pen a memoir about her life, and while everyone is freaking out that Samantha is using her relationship with LiLo to garner interest (she is), the DJ/club owner/child-of-a-socialite probably has some juicy niblets from her own life that don't involve Fire Crotch. Is Ronson a legitimate celebrity without Lindsay? No. But that's not usually a criteria for authors.

Best part of the whole book lead up?

Rumor has it that MSNBC newsman Chris Matthews will run for senate once his contract runs out.

Seizing on those rumors, Philadelphia Gay News publisher Mark Segal asked Matthews about his stance on gay marriage. After eschewing the question - what would Matthews do about the defense of marriage act - Matthews went into a valid tirade about freedom, which could come across as support.

Segal, however, wanted specifics. What he received were expletives:
