PAGING DR. BURKE: YOU WERE FIRED LAST YEAR, SHUT UP "Former Grey's Anatomy star Isaiah Washington — who was axed from the show in 2007 after spewing a homophobic slur at T.R. Knight — is slamming the show for firing Brooke Smith. 'I looked at a brilliant actress, whom I have adored since I first saw her in Silence of the Lambs,' he says in the Nov. 17 issue of TV Guide. 'For her to be treated this way, I find very interesting. … Now that I see what they're doing to a show that I love and I care about, I think it's disgusting.'"

Shady Business

Patrick Dempsey appeared on Ellen DeGeneres' talk show yesterday and, yes, the conversation turned to actress Brooke Smith's recent axing from ABC's Grey's Anatomy.

Some suspect ABC gave Smith the boot because her on-screen lesbian relationship was getting a bit too serious. Dempsey gave no credence to those rumors — not because they're not true, but because network executives told him what to say:

CAN YOU TAKE HEIGL WITH YOU? Spoiler alert: "Brooke Smith ends her run as Dr. Erica Hahn this Thursday on the ABC hit Grey's Anatomy. She joined the cast last season as the outspoken and brash Dr. Hahn, quickly becoming a fan favorite. On Thursday's episode Dr. Hahn made a weepy declaration that she was a lesbian after her bond with Callie Torres (Sara Ramirez) quickly moved into relationship territory. EW.com's Michael Ausiello reported Monday that the relationship's fast clip may have factored in the decision to dump Smith. But show creator Shonda Rhimes denied the allegation."

TV AUDIENCES CONTINUE TO DWINDLE "Every season premiere Thursday night drew a lower rating than last fall, as returning favorites such as ABC's 'Grey's Anatomy,' CBS' 'Survivor' and NBC's 'The Office' tripped across the board. ABC firmly won the night, as expected. Its two-hour fifth season premiere of 'Grey's Anatomy' (18.5 million viewers, 7.4 national adults 18 to 49 rating and an 18 share) was the evening's highest-rated and most-watched show, with each half hour growing in the Nielsens. Yet 'Grey's' was down 17% from last fall’s one-hour opener. Lead-in 'Ugly Betty' (9.8 million, 3.3/9) slipped 15%, marking its lowest-rated debut to date."

See You In Four Years

About a month has passed since the Olympics and Michael Phelps' celebrity is still holding its own — but the appeal of NBC's dolphin boy has already started to wane. Take, for example, this spoof of Grey's Anatomy, featuring the new Dr. McSwimmy. It's cute, sure, but there's only so much a guy with really bad speaking and acting skills can do to stay relevant. Which is why he should look into adopting the "be seen and not heard" policy.

We don't watch Grey's Anatomy because we just don't, so we have no idea what exactly is going on in all these ads on the site. In all seriousness – and we need to know this like Matt Damon needs to know if Sarah Palin believes an old man made us all out of clay – do they really say "poignant" things like "You're my person" on that show?

SPOILER ALERT "Katherine Heigl could be killed off Grey's Anatomy next season [by] giving her character, Dr. Izzie Stevens, a brain tumor. … Still, there’s good news for fans sad to see Izzie suffer: newly single Jeffrey Dean Morgan will reprise his role as hunky patient Denny Duquette, whom Izzie will see in visions brought on by the tumor."

Bye Bye, Izzie

kheiglgreys.jpg

Looks like Katherine Heigl might have to take her whining elsewhere, because rumor has it Grey's Anatomy creator Shonda Rhimes is considering killing off Heigl's Izzie Stevens. And not just because the character has become insufferable — Katherine's recent comments about the upcoming Emmys have pissed off the writers and others on the set.

'It's not good there,' a source tells of the Grey's Anatomy set. 'Shonda is pissed. They're thinking of killing her off. They want Izzie dead.'

Congrats, Katherine! Now you can leave that worthless little show and get on with your dreams of becoming the next Jennifer Aniston.

Katherine's Ugly Truth

kheigluglytruth

A day after Katherine Heigl announced she was pulling her name from the Emmy race because she wasn't "given the material this season to warrant an Emmy nomination," a Grey's Anatomy insider fired back with some choice words of his/her own:

The show bent over backwards to accommodate her film schedule, and then she criticizes the show for lack of material? It's an ungrateful slap in the face to the very writers responsible for her Emmy win in the first place.

We would kill to be a fly on the wall when filming begins for next season.

At right: This is how we picture Katherine — in between shooting scenes for The Ugly Truth — on the set of every project.

By Katherine Heigl

kheiglemmy.jpg

Katherine Heigl — who publicly complained about Knocked Up, the movie that made her a star — will not be repeating her Emmy win from last year because she pulled her name from consideration. Why would she do that, you ask? Because she's an idiot. And she's an even bigger idiot for giving a reason that alienates the Grey's Anatomy writers.

I did not feel that I was given the material this season to warrant an Emmy nomination and in an effort to maintain the integrity of the academy organization, I withdrew my name from contention. In addition, I did not want to potentially take away an opportunity from an actress who was given such materials.

While she does have a point, surely there was a much better way to go about this. Like — going out on a limb here — she could have just kept her mouth shut?

After the jump: A clip of some of that great material.

What Is Katherine Smoking?

katherine_hiegl5_wenn17757632.jpg

Katherine Heigl is reportedly trying to get out of her Grey's Anatomy contract so she can become a serious movie actress. This is all coming from the National Enquirer, so take it with a grain of salt.

After starring in the hit films Knocked Up and 27 Dresses, Katherine believes she has outgrown the small screen.

'Katherine has even suggested to Grey’s producers that they kill her character Dr. Izzie Stevens in dramatic fashion so her exit could bring in huge ratings,' a pal of the 29-year-old Emmy winner told The Enquirer.

Someone stars in a couple chick flicks and they think they're too good for Grey's? Let's hope McDreamy isn't aware of that rule.

In an effort to bolster the ever-assailed decorum of the Internet, Mollygood looks to poetry with Someone Haiku. Each day – using 17 syllables or less – you’re given the opportunity to wax poetic about some piece of flotsam or jetsam that’s washed up on the shores of Mollygood. Hopefully this Zen practice will not only bathe you in self-discovery, but also bring a touch of Eastern class to a global network of information that’s devolved into nothing more than tit websites and provocative MySpace pictures.

Today's Someone Haiku winner is Tupelo:

Dude, where’s my wallet?

So, so good, that one.

She Still Cashed the Check

heigl

In a profile with the egregiously uninspired title Heigl's Anatomy, Grey's Anatomy star Katherine Heigl (see what they did?), expresses regret about being in summer blockbuster Knocked Up, which she felt was sophomoric and "sexist."

"It paints the women as shrews, as humorless and uptight, and it paints the men as goofy, fun-loving guys,” the actress — who just turned 29— tells January's Vanity Fair.

"It was hard for me to love the movie…"

We wonder if it's hard for her to love the Vanity Fair cover she's getting that never would have been had it not been for that "shrewish" turn, or the $300,000 payday that appended the film's production. Somehow we doubt it, but we're sure she cried all the way to the bank.

As pride parades nationwide ready themselves to march, another voice has cut the brief—and welcome—silence surrounding "faggotgate," reminding us that the festivities have some ugly origins. This time, however, the cacophony comes not from a Grey's Anatomy cast member, but an angry lesbian; and she's not calling for Isaiah Washington's head, but instead for him to be forgiven and reinstated to the medical drama. Page Six reports:

Jasmyne Cannick, who worked with Washington on the Pan African Arts Festival, said she's infuriated ABC booted Washington from the show's upcoming fourth season for calling Knight a "faggot" during a scuffle on the set and believes it smacks of racism. So she's launched a petition - which had 1,233 signatures as of last night - to get the actor his job back.

The petition says Washington's firing "further adds to a disturbing new trend at ABC wherein minority actors have been dismissed at an alarming rate over the past two years. Blacks, including . . . Star Jones ('The View'), Harold Perrineau ('Lost'), Alfre Woodard, Mehcad Brooks and Page Kennedy ('Desperate Housewives') have been let go . . . One must ask themselves, what is going on? . . . While we don't approve of [Washington's] use of the F-word at the Golden Globes, Washington has since apologized and gone on to perform community service by way of a public service announcement for the very organizations that have been orchestrating his dismissal. But it seems it wasn't enough."
