The Good Guys

Huzzah! America's surrogate grandfather, Morgan Freeman, is said to be recovering nicely from surgery in Tennessee after breaking his arm and elbow in a serious car accident.

Now let's all go back to dreaming about an invite to a Freeman household dinner party. (This I guarantee: the food would be as delicious as the conversation, and there would be a fire in the fireplace.)

FREEMAN IN CAR ACCIDENT "Academy Award winning actor Morgan Freeman has been injured in a serious car accident in Mississippi. Cops tell us the Dark Knight star was in a one car accident around 11:30 PM last night north of the small town of Ruleville. He was airlifted from the accident scene to a hospital in Memphis, Tenn. We're told alcohol is not suspected as a factor in the wreck."

Last night a dreary and overcast New York City was treated to the premiere of The Dark Knight, which featured a black carpet. The stars of the movie and all the D-listers in attendance followed suit by dressing in the somber hue, except for a select few (Regis, we're looking at you).

Lots of pictures after the jump.

Nobody's Perfect

Oh no! Julia Roberts couldn't do it; nor could Amanda Peet or Denzel Washington. And it looks like Katie Holmes' chance to do it was over before it even began. But we had such high hopes for Morgan Freeman! He was supposed to be The One, the major movie star that would take Broadway by storm with a performance hailed by critics and ticket buyers alike. Alas, it was not to be:

… if Mr. Freeman [in The Country Girl] was still unsure of his lines, it was undetectable in the performance I saw, which exuded a low-key confidence and charm. (This is not, I hasten to point out, what the part requires at all times.) And if you compare this version’s script with Odets’s published text, the deletions and discrepancies don’t change the sense of things, though the word substitutions are often bizarrely capricious. I would happily have put up with flubbed lines if real runaway feelings accompanied them.

In theater as in film Mr. Freeman is a quietly commanding presence. When Frank auditions for Bernie, the producer (Chip Zien) and the playwright (Remy Auberjonois) in the opening scene and begins improvising, you get a flash of the wild-card artistry that makes Bernie prize him. Otherwise he seems natural, affable, occasionally irritable, but not like a man wrestling with demons.

The Paper Chase

Yesterday's New York Times profile of Morgan Freeman was, for me, akin to learning Santa's not real all over again:

"I really spent 20 years in theater trying to get into the movies," he said. "From childhood that’s what I wanted to do. Mostly I don’t want to do stage. It’s too much work. Movies, you do a little work, make a lot of money and move on. I like that."

When beautiful people gather in fancy clothes, we're all supposed to take notice. I have a hard time distinguishing all these events from one another, but this weekend's Palm Spring Awards (guess where) brought out some especially shiny people. Even Sienna Miller was able to remind me why she's considered special in the first place. Hell, anywhere Brad Pitt shows up will get a moment of oohs and aaahs from this girl, even though he is looking quite old these days. I shed a tear for my memorizing every single word of Legends of the Fall self. I was so cool in Middle School.

* Sorry

I'll tell you one thing, Brad Pitt, Morgan Freeman, Kevin Spacey and Gwyneth Paltrow's pretty head have nothing, nothing I say, on these stuffed animals reinacting the ending of Se7en. It's like how when I was younger my father convinced me that by the time I became an adult there would be no actors, only computer images made to look like perfect human specimens who would be our idolized celebrities. Only this time it's with plush toys, one of which is creepily perfect in the Kevin Spacey role.
