'NOTEBOOK' ROMANCE ENDS AGAIN "Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams' on-off romance is off again, just four months after they sealed their reunion with a public kiss. … A source tells Us Weekly, 'Rachel is too controlling. They broke up the first time because of their busy schedules — and that's the problem again.'"

Taking A Moment To Be Shallow

The Hollywood Film Festival awards gala was held last night in Beverly Hills, and we would have admittedly given our right arm to be there. Look at all those pretty men! There's Christian Bale, obviously, and Ryan Gosling, James Franco and Josh Brolin — and two newbies to keep your eyes on, Robert Pattinson (who will be starring in the upcoming Twilight film) and Chris Pine (who will play Captain Kirk in the Star Trek movie). We don't even care that Angelina Jolie made a surprise appearance to pay tribute to Clint Eastwood — there's too much pretty elsewhere.

Wishful Thinking

In news that makes us happier than it should, Ryan Gosling is reportedly planning to propose to girlfriend and The Notebook co-star Rachel McAdams. Squee! All is right in the world. According to a source:

Ryan has already bought her the perfect ring — whether it's a present or for a pending engagement, I cannot say. What I do know is that they have been looking at houses together in Toronto and LA and are ready to take the next step. … They've been through a lot over the past couple years, but have survived it all. It's getting very serious, very quickly!

Um, yeah. This person doesn't sound very reliable, but we plan on eating cookie dough and watching The Notebook to reminisce anyway.

And Cuter Than The Rest Of Us

The Notebook co-stars Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams are apparently back together, as evidenced by their adorable PDA-filled breakfast in Toronto. Usually this kind of stuff makes us annoyed or bitter, but they have some magical power that makes us happy for them at all times.

Young Love

Good news for fans of The Notebook (in other words, every female in the world); bad news for those of us who were hoping to date Ryan Gosling: The actor and his former co-star Rachel McAdams are back together, according to a source who spotted the two "getting close" in Toronto.

Ryan Gosling showed the rest of Hollywood how to be a decent human being last night during the Campus Progress National Conference, which hosted about 300 college activists who witnessed a four-person panel discussion on Darfur. Ryan was humble the entire time, expressing gratitude for his ability to participate:

'For some reason, there's an interest in what people who do what I do have to say,' the actor murmured. 'I don't particularly have that much to say … but I do have these experiences that I can relay. I'm honored to have these experiences.'

Gosling sounded sheepish … describing the way the children he met on a visit to refugee camps stared at him: 'Not like I was just some actor from Hollywood who was there to have an experience. They looked at me like I was somebody who could really do something. And I didn't consider myself in that way.'

It's nice to see a celebrity who actually does good deeds without advertising them on every talk show or tabloid across America. Call me, Ryan.

Is It Time For Joan To Retire Yet?

• You would think with as much experience as she has terrorizing television audiences, Joan Rivers would grasp the concept of live TV. [QT]

• She's come so far: Britney Spears is allowed to be around wildlife without a huge tranquilizer gun nearby. [ICYDK]

Rod Stewart is still in the baby-making business. Hope you weren't eating lunch. [INO]

PETA has moved on to harassing Jessica Simpson. Unfortunately, Jess can hardly pronounce PETA, let alone understand what the organization does. [DListed]

• Remind me to set aside some time to stalk Ryan Gosling while he's in NYC. [PS]

Good Cries

judecry

A new series of portraits by conceptual photographer Sam Taylor-Wood features some of Hollywood's most sought after leading men – Sean Penn, Ryan Gosling, Daniel Craig, etc – in tears. According to Taylor-Wood, the idea's pretty simple: "It's about the idea of taking these big, masculine men and showing a different side." Yay, straightforward, unpretentious art.

I'm a crier myself, so I say more power to Taylor-Wood and her subjects. And special kudos to Jude Law, who went above and beyond by not just crying, but doing so in a corner in the fetal position.

Good Causes

Cute boy Ryan Gosling can officially add animal rights activist to his résumé. The Canadian ex-Mouseketeer recently sent a letter to the the CEO of KFC Canada, John Bitove, asking him to help end the factory farming abuses common in commercial chicken production. The letter was a wonderful gesture, but, unfortunately, Gosling forgot to enclose in it a check for hundreds of millions of dollars, which is what it would take to get these greedy, bloated captains of death to stop what they're doing. Oh, well!

After the jump, the letter's text and an abominable video from inside a chicken factory, courtesy of PETA.

Ryan Gosling received the Santa Barbara Film Festival's inaugural Independent Award, an honor established to recognize actors who have made "a significant and unique contribution to independent film." Presumably the festival committee was most impressed by Gosling's breakthrough work in Young Hercules.

COZYING UP "…Tuesday night, [Ryan Gosling] only had eyes for Heath Ledger's ex, Michelle Williams. The two had dinner at Piadina and were caught by onlookers having a cozy cigarette outside the West 10th Street eatery. The star of "Lars and the Real Girl" was "smiling and gazing at her," said our witness. Reps for both said they weren't on a date, but just discussing an upcoming film project they're working on together."

Chateau Marmont Unites

"Heroes" cheerleader Hayden Panettiere noshed…at the Chateau Marmont in L.A. over the weekend…the actress changed sunglasses three times during lunch. Her various looks must have intrigued Ryan Gosling, who came over to her table. "They were hugging a lot, and they ended up exchanging numbers," said an onlooker.

Question raised: Is she cooler than one would expect or is he not as cool as one would hope?

GQ held their annual Men of the Year awards soirée last evening at Hollywood's famed Chateau Marmont.

Fun fact: Very few Men of the Year at the Men of the Year party. Is their shunning of such crap the key to their glory? Maybe!

Nevertheless, the aggregation of celebrities was thicker than 18-year-old Hayden Panettiere's makeup. Even Rumer Willis was there!!!!!!! Click through to see.

Tired of hating yourself and your boyfriend for not hating himself? Help is on the way! Just one week after it was revealed that Ryan Gosling's chunky physique may have contributed to his dismissal from a film role, directer Ridley Scott has reported that he demanded from the stocky Russell Crowe a 30 pound weight loss before filming began on their newest project, Body of Lies. Finally, everyone can be afraid of looking in the mirror.

A Los Angeles Times story says that the "creative differences" Ryan Gosling cited for leaving the cast of The Lovely Bones had a lot to do with his weight gain, which the film's once-portly director Peter Jackson found unattractive.

According to sources, the 26-year-old Gosling had apparently told the director he was going to gain weight to age himself up to play the part of a grieving father, but Jackson was still expecting some movie star allure — not paunch and a beard. By Friday, Gosling had left the high-profile production over those pesky "creative differences"…

Stars: They're just like us, then they get yelled at and fired for it.
