Hate, Baby, Hate

Well aware that things aren't going well for their guy, Sarah Palin and a bunch of angry Iowa Republicans got together in Des Moines yesterday to whine about Barack Obama. While the vice-presidential nominee went on a crazy cat lady rant about how Obama's policies would make it so that the things a person buys aren't theirs (a lie, by the way), one of her supporter's decided to cut the chit chat and get right to the heart of the matter: "he's a nigger!"

Palin says nothing of the slur, a move that's cowardly at best and a tacit agreement at worst.

Video after the jump.

MANY PEOPLE FINDING NEW WAYS TO SIT ON THEIR ASSES "'Screen time,' or the amount of time the average American spends watching content on a thin, flat surface, is on the rise. But the real growth is coming from nontraditional watching, not TV time, according to Nielsen. Nielsen found that Americans spent 56% more time watching time-shifted TV, primarily on a digital video recorders, and 9% more time using the internet to watch at home and at work. Overall TV viewing — live and played back — increased only 4% …"

GEORGE CARLIN WOULD BE PROUD "Viewer complaints about naughty programming dropped massively in the third quarter of 2007, according to the latest data from the Federal Communications Commission. While the second quarter of 2007 saw 4,368 complaints come into the agency, the following quarter logged a mere 368 — precisely 4,000 less. During the first quarter, nearly 150,000 complaints came in."

The Aging Idiot Box

oldpeopletv

According to media research firm Magna Global, the median age of television viewers is now 50-years-old, older than ever before and one year outside the all-important 18-49 demographic. Of the top five networks (ABC, NBC, CBS, Fox and CW) CBS's viewership is the most crotchety, with a median age of 54. By contrast, the CW – home of Gossip Girl – has a fan base with a median age 20 years less than that.

Why are couch potatoes graying? Because the olds don't know how to "googlize" things, nor do they get what those darn "virus videos" are all about.

"The median ages of the broadcast networks keep rising, as traditional television is no longer necessarily the first screen for the younger set," [a spokesperson for Magna Global] wrote.

The absolute oldest viewership of all ad-supported cable networks is that of Fox News' daytime and prime time lineup. Presumably that's also the viewership most likely to be "sick of all your lip" and racist.

What's Going On?

By now everyone's heard about this nut in California who beat a toddler to death on the side of a road because he believed the one-year-old boy was filled with demons, right? Yes, OK: sad, shocking, disgusting—all of it. But did anyone else read that three or four cars of people pulled over to survey the incident before NOT DOING A FUCKING THING TO STOP THIS ASSHOLE FROM KICKING A BABY TO DEATH!!!!!!! This according to a police officer who arrived after the boy was dead:

What we got from witnesses is he was punching, slapping, kicking, stomping, shaking … They tried to intervene and get involved, but their efforts really didn't have an effect. The suspect was engaged in what he was doing. He just pushed them off and went back to it.

Um, really? They tried but the suspect was "too engaged" to be stopped? Wow. Allow me to quote the immortal Yoda here: "Do, or do not. There is no 'try.'" Got that, people? If you and two or three carloads of others see an unarmed man smashing a toddler into the pavement, everyone needs to get out of the fucking Hyundais and pile on the guy. If he's strong enough to push all of you off, then someone should hit him in the head with a tire iron until he stops moving. Then call the cops.

What the fuck is wrong with people? Is everyone really this scared?

Censorship

The American Medical Association, which has nothing really important to do in this glorious age for American health care, is upset that the new Incredible Hulk film portrays the character General Thunderbolt Ross as a heavy cigar smoker. The physicians' group worries that children who empathize with the evil general and his sinister plot to destroy Bruce Banner's mutant alter-ego could very well develop a dangerous addiction to expensive, outsize cigars. Seriously:

Dianne Fenyk, president of the advocacy group, A.M.A. Alliance, is particularly infuriated because General Ross did not smoke in “Hulk,” the 2003 film directed by Ang Lee, though he always smoked in the comic books. …

“Hollywood studios should be especially embarrassed for using comic-book movies, which they market to children and know youth will want to see, to promote tobacco,” Ms. Fenyk said.

People who should also be "especially embarrassed" are parents who let their children get their hands on cigars in order to be more like insidious villains hellbent on catching giant green monsters.

MOVIE THEATERS WILL CONTINUE GOUGING THE SHIT OUT OF YOU "With 31% of the total 2008 US corn crop expected to be devoted to ethanol, the price of popcorn would already be increasing again next year. Now, the disastrous flooding in the Midwest has apparently destroyed a significant portion of next year's crop. Ethanol production and heavy rains in America's Corn Belt have created a 'Perfect Storm' that could result in $7+ for a large popcorn sometime next year."

Race Wars

Mamma mia! Angry black man Spike Lee is getting a taste of his own opportunistic outrage.

After spending the past couple weeks hectoring fellow director Clint Eastwood with charges of prejudiced casting, Lee is now under fire from the Italic Institute of America, which is as bitter as Campari about Lee's portrayal of Italians.

According to Bill Dal Cerro, president of the Italic Institute of America, Lee may have his own anti-Italian racist tendencies to worry about.

"Spike Lee is very talented, but I sometimes wish he'd practice what he preaches," Dal Cerro said. "His points about African-Americans are well taken, but, ironically, he does the same thing to Italians in his films."

While Dal Cerro doesn't get into specific charges against Lee, we imagine he takes issue with the way a lot of the Italian Americans in Lee's films are fiery, Brooklyn-accented racists who would rather see their daughter's dead than with "some fuggin' moulignan." If you've seen Jungle Fever and Do the Right Thing, you know Dal Cerro has a point, but then again, you won't catch our wide nose in Bensonhurst at night.

After the jump, "Fuck you, fuck your fuckin' pizza and fuck Frank Sinatra."

WANNA BE UNGOOGLEABLE? "'UnGoogleable? I don’t think it’s possible,' Nilhan Jayasinghe, the head of natural search for iCrossing, an online marketing firm … 'The problem is you simply have no control over all the outlets that publish something about you.' … There’s virtually no way to get all the references taken down unless you track down each person responsible for publishing the details and plead your case to them. … You may succeed in getting your university friends to pull those late-night, drink-filled photo shoots before a prospective employer sees them, but otherwise, your reputation is in the hands of many. You have less control than you think. Sounding a bit like an overprotective parent, Mr Jayasinghe’s best advice is to avoid doing anything stupid in the first place. As for being unGoogleable, forget about it. The majority of us all will show up on Google (or worse, a wanton namesake will) at some point in our lives. If you don’t like the look of it, then fill your life with good online deeds and hope they float to the top of the rankings."

Futile Efforts

Look, we love Zach Galifianakis and New York City and not having to go into an office to work, but does the world really need another movie about the suburbs sucking and the insanity of "normal" people and their contentedness?

Sorry, ambitious filmmakers, but it's pretty clear from the state of things that nobody gives a shit. We say you give Hollywood to the Wayans brothers and meet us in Brooklyn for a barbecue.

After the jump, a by no means definitive collection of "Bourgeois Angst" film trailers.
