Tim Robbins' self-righteousness is quickly becoming the only reason I'd ever vote Republican. You know, just to piss him off.

This Huffington Post rant is naturally in regards to Tim Robbins having his constitutional right to vote taken away from him…because he showed up at the wrong polling place and made such a scene that the police where called. Of course he could apologize and admit a mistake, but nope. Shawshank Redemption here is going to dig himself in a little deeper.

PROP 8 TAINTS OBAMA VICTORY FOR DEGENERES "Ellen DeGeneres says she is 'saddened beyond belief' by the passage of a constitutional amendment in California banning gay marriage. The talk show host said in a statement Wednesday to The Associated Press that she, 'like millions of Americans, felt like we had taken a giant step toward equality' by electing Barack Obama as president. DeGeneres says that with the passage of California’s Proposition 8, 'we took a giant step away.'"

SF SHIT PLANT WON'T TAKE BUSH'S NAME "San Francisco voters have turned down the chance to rename a local sewage plant after President Bush. Voters rejected Proposition R, a lighthearted attempt to memorialize the outgoing president at the Oceanside Water Pollution Control Plant. The measure's supporters say calling it the George W. Bush Sewage Plant would have been a fitting tribute to the 43rd president. They blamed Bush for a long list of national woes from the Iraq war to the slumping economy. … The White House had declined comment on the measure, but other Republicans have denounced it as childish and stupid."

PROP 8 IN TROUBLE "A measure to once again ban gay marriage in California led Tuesday, throwing into doubt the unions of an estimated 18,000 same-sex couples who wed during the last 4 1/2 months. As the measure, the most divisive and emotionally fraught on the state ballot this year, took a lead in early returns, supporters gathered at a hotel ballroom in Sacramento and cheered."

Notes from the Votes

The polls are almost closed, but the polling place stories continue.

This one comes to us from stopthemadness, who voted in West Hollywood. It wouldn't be an '08 Election Day without the gays!

Bitchassness

Birthday boy Diddy, upon leaving his Manhattan polling site:

I felt like my vote was the vote that put [Barack Obama] into office. It was down to one vote, and that was going to be my vote. And that may not be true, but that's how much power it felt like I had.

If you don't get choked up at this story from a Stereohyped reader about her time in the polling line, then your heart is officially frozen.

Naive Melody

Little-Known Fact: Talking Heads frontman and avid cyclist David Byrne is not American, and can't vote because of his immigrant status. At least, according to the emails he's been sending out to everyone. (But why hasn't he applied for a Green Card in the 20+ years he's been in NYC?)

We thought: Canadian? But it turns out he's Scottish.

Full Byrne email, in all its strangely cryptic glory, after the jump:

USA! USA! USA! We've got another tale of democratic mayhem directly from a reader who braved the polling places today.

Ashley voted in New York City this morning and learned that, no matter what your t-shirt might say, NY don't heart you. Click through to remind yourself why you live in a small town, and keep sending your voting stories, funny or horrific, to squeal@mollygood.com.

Actually, I already voted this morning. And when I went into that booth, I thought about how my battalion got deployed to Iraq four times! I thought about that and about my brothers that are still over there, so you don't talk to me.

-An Arlington, Virginia man to a GOP poll watcher attempting to hand him a sample Republican ballot this morning. Soon after the confrontation, the Republican volunteer, the only one at the polling place, gathered his things and left.

MCCAIN, NADER COME UP SHORT IN DIXVILLE NOTCH "Democrat Barack Obama came up a big winner in the presidential race in Dixville Notch, N.H., where the nation's first Election Day votes were cast and counted early Tuesday. Obama defeated John McCain 15-6. Independent Ralph Nader was also on the ballot, but received no votes. The first voter, following tradition established in 1948, was picked ahead of the midnight voting and the rest of the town's 19 registered voters followed suit in Tuesday's first minutes. … President Bush won the vote in Dixville Notch in 2004 on the way to his re-election."

Here we go!

After months of whining from on high in New York City, all day today, your faithful editor will be coming at you live from Virginia/Washington DC, where he'll be doing some last minute things to help his guy win before crossing his fingers and drinking heavily. It should be chaotic/fun/scary, and worth watching.

Get out there and vote and check back often.

DEGENERES PUTS HER MONEY WHERE HER HEART IS "US talk show host Ellen DeGeneres has bought $100,000 of TV airtime to back gay marriage. The 50-year-old will urge Californians to vote to save the right to gay marriage during the state ballot in November, campaign organisers said. … Her TV advert will be screened in the run-up to the state ballot on 4 November."
