The Real Issues

Future First Lady Michelle Obama has already influenced many housewives around America through, of course, her sense of style. Last night's red and black Narciso Rodriguez dress has divided the nation, giving Us Weekly a great "Love It or Hate It?" column for this week, but most of Michelle's numbers have been clear yays or nays. Maria Pinto has likely profited the most from this phenomenon: The designer's duds have been spotted on Michelle throughout the campaign and has attributed to a 45 percent spike in sales.

After the jump: The best of the best and the worst of the worst, because the new First Lady's style is what really matters this election season.

The Best

From left to right: A black outfit that's simple and conservative without making Michelle look outdated; a beautiful purple dress that makes Michelle look classy but not elitist; the infamous black and white dress Michelle sported on The View that sold out shortly after it was spotted on air.

The Worst

From left to right: A great cut that's ruined by a stack of Post-Its attached around the neckline; the horribly outdated sweater-tied-around-the-neck look; an age-inappropriate dress that's the wrong cut and looks like it should be worn to a 16-year-old's high school formal.

Let me first say that I think that Michelle Obama is a class act all the way, and I cannot wait to see her as our new first lady.

That being said, that dress she had on last night was a train wreck. Even my straight male roommate agreed that she needs to get a stylist - quick. Seeing the above outfits, even those labeled "the worst," I don't think any are as bad as that red and black fiasco.

She's definitely on the right track for the most part though - and she has an AMAZING figure and flawless skin.

(Oh, and how beautiful are her daughters?)

I guess we're taking the "no frills first lady" thing pretty literally. :)

I would wear that first outfit, and I would wear it with a vengeance. And lo it would go down in my mental history as one of the most kickass outfits I ever did.

I agree Helen, my straight male boyfriend who wouldn't know fashion if it slapped him on the ass, commented on the bloody Rorscharch ink dress.
I love Narciso Rodriguez designs but that doesn't look like something he'd do, hope he hasn't lost his mind.
And while I voted for the other guy, Obama's girls are indeed adorable and now they get a puppy! How exciting :-)

The money spent on those expensive designer clothes could have fed hundreds of starving babies. Didn't anyone tell her she should go shopping with Sarah Palin at Walmart?

Where is my personal favorite, the sweater over the white wife beater? When I saw her in that, I knew she was in a class all by herself. Cindy McCain would never be caught wearing a wife beater! Rock it, Michelle!

Can't wait to see how great she looks at the inauguration!

I usually notice stuff like this, and I am just now looking at her dress. I guess I was a little distracted last night. I think by Biden's mom. This picture kind of confuses me - what is going on around her middle.

She and the girls are really gorgeous. I am so excited to see them all in the White House!!

I love me some Michelle Obama, but that dress needs to go! In the trash bin. It's unflattering and even a little "evil Disney witch"… But she does look great most of the time.

If I could have hand-picked my White House, it would have been Barack, married to Cindy McCain (because she's just TOO fabulous to pass up), Biden would be married to Palin (because she has no place actually WORKING in government, but we'd get to keep making fun of her). Fun, right?

All the talk about Michelle Obama's outfits is the reason why Sarah Palin's people felt she needed to go on a shopping spree and hire a stylist. You can't win.

I'm glad somebody has finally taken the initiative to tackle this important issue. I was enjoying the afterglow of Obama's speech and then bam! Michelle's dress accosted my eyes! Oh Michellllllllllllllllllllle! Don't dissapoint us at the inauguration.

Oh and Palin can now go back to wearing fleecy sweaters with dreamy images of wolves and bears and shit.

The way their campaign dropped all that money on her, I pictured Palin was running around the tundra wearing only moose pelts and pumps, governing from a hut until the McCain ampaign came along and plucked her from obscurity. A bit of a stretch, I know. Anyway, yeah Michelle Obama looked pretty good. And didn't have to spend a ton of money in a short time to do it. Though I don't think Palin had designers donating their latest cuts to the Grampy/Caribou Barbie campaign like the Obama campaign did.

JD let me explain this to you so that you understand. Sarah Palin needed those clothes so that she would look more like a profesional politican. Only an idiot would say she didnt need to make a good impresion. Sorry about my spelling you gramar nazis. I had a couple beers tonight and my spelling is not at the top of my game. Michele Hussein Obama is nowhere near as hot as Sarah. She wears the wrong shoes and can't pull off the empire waist. Sarah knows that a tailored jacket with a short peplum looks more flatering. And she wears her pumps with a four inch heel to give her a little more hight. Her amber highlights also give her a more youthfull glow. Its obvios you don't understand style basics.

julie, the reason why seeing "sheets" scared me is because I was thinking the sheets were white . . . as in the KKK! That's the only time I object to people wearing sheets.

LOL Matt, you know more about their fashion than my best gay Jason (he even voted for McCain).

No. 24 say what? says:

Michelle Hussein Obama?

She and her hubby have the same middle name?

Oh, you were making a feeble attempt at…um…

well, at WHAT, I'm not sure…

whatever it was, it failed miserably.

that being said, I didn't really like the dress she had on Tuesday night. I think they were going for the matching look, red and black, but she could have found a more flattering dress. I like that she dresses in a fairly simple way most of the time, though. And that's indicative of her personality. The practicality of her style (functional yet classy) seems to be how she is in her life. Efficient, yet diplomatic.

and yes, their daughters are just adorable. I think it's going to be so nice to have little kids in the WH.

Matt, are you saying that it takes $150k wardrobe to look professional? Ummm…isn't she the damn Governor of Alaska? Shouldn't she already own a few suits? Okay, I'll give you the fact that she may have needed some new duds, but she (or her aides) couldn't have found them on a better budget? Especially in this economic climate? Especially since she was being touted as "one of us" "just your ordinary hockey mom" and "Jane Everywoman"? She could have gone to Macy's and gotten some nice attire, did those clothes have to come from Neiman's and Saks (aka, the Macy's for the rich and "elite")?

Oh and by the way, Michelle's middle name is LaVaughn, jackass. Have some respect, Democrats don't like George Bush, but we still show respect for Laura.

I'm betting Michelle's dress was cuter in person. I think it looked weird on television - those red parts looked like they were moving. That said, who else thinks Michelle might be pregnant? I'm trying to start that rumor.

I don't think it behooves any woman to wear a red hour glass design on her torso.

It reminds me of a poisonous spider.

i thought the red and black dress was fabulous. i thought it was a perfect way to take a runway-ready dress and turn it into a dress that a normal woman could wear. amazing! wonderful. if you've seen the pictures of NR RTWspring2009, the bodice is waay too short for any normal woman with a chest and the hemline is too sheer and short for a real woman with hips and legs. the runway model looked wonderful in the runway version, and michelle looked wonderful in the "real-woman" version. i thought she "barack-ed" it ;)

no qc, I haven't seen that!

I always look at a person's shoes. Women to see if I like them, and men to get a clue to their personality. yes, you CAN tell a lot about a man by his shoes.
