USA! USA! USA!

How long has this election been dragging on, like, 10 years or something? Tonight will (hopefully) bring an end to the race, with either a Barack Obama or John McCain victory. While we watch history being made, we encourage all of our readers to chime in throughout the evening with their thoughts on the results. We'll be popping in from time to time — Cord with coverage of the DC scene and Whitney from NYC — to keep you updated on the returns and the final result.

And, for the love of Xenu, don't kill each other.

7:27 Obama will probably take Vermont and McCain will probably take Kentucky. Indulge in either ice cream or fried chicken to celebrate your candidate's march toward victory.

7:30pm Har har har: www.isobamapresident.com AND www.ismccainpresident.com

7:35pm Your editor is putting on not just a tie, but a BROOKS BROTHERS TIE!!! Fact: All of Washington, DC gets together to kill you if you don't wear Brooks Brothers.

7:44pm MSNBC is rolling footage of John McCain's final statement to the reporters on the Straight Talk No Spin Jet. Cindy looks as sad as ever and Joe Lieberman looks like a nauseous baby standing behind John.

7:46pm MSNBC is calling South Carolina for McCain. That's not a surprise, as one thing SC is famous for is its vehement racism.

8:00pm MSNBC IS CALLING PENNSYLVANIA, NEW HAMPSHIRE AND MAINE FOR OBAMA!!! IT'S GOING TO BE VERY, VERY, VERY, VERY, VERY HARD FOR MCCAIN TO WIN THIS ELECTION!!!!!!!!!AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

8:13pm Your editor, Cord, is off to the DCCC party to drink two free drinks and then more which will cost money. If you're in DC, go find him and pay for these supplementary drinks.

10:11pm Your associate editor, Whitney, is back from a Democratic Leadership party where there was no air conditioning or cell phone service (and $6 beers — what the hell kind of drinks specials are that?!) but lots of happy liberals. Now it's just you, me and the cat.

10:12pm Texts from Cord over the past hour: "He won Ohio! It's over! Over! And tell the fuckers I said so!" and "They're playing we are the champions at the DCCC. It is 9:30."

10:21pm CNN is calling Texas for John McCain — this is not surprising, but I'm slightly proud as to how close the race is in my home state. Yay, the south!

10:22pm Two senior McCain aides have said they see "no path to victory" at this point in the results.

10:25pm New text from Cord: "I just called my father in France to tell him we have a black prez. He said he never thought he'd see one. The republicans are haters!"

10:47pm Is anyone else watching this hologram thing on CNN? It was creepy enough earlier with the CNN reporter, but now Will.I.Am? Really? Really?

11:00pm OBAMA WINS IT! CNN projects he will be THE NEXT PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES! THIS IS THE GREATEST NIGHT OF OUR LIVES!!!!!

11:20pm John McCain is out to speak to the crying racists and congratulate Obama. And no, McCain, we are still not your "friends."

11:31pm McCain's speech is over; it was eloquent and classy as expected. The crowd was unruly and distraught, also as expected.

11:33pm Back to the Obama crowd in Chicago. There's Oprah! Hi, Oprah!

11:50pm Text from Cord: "People are nuts. Honestly crying. America really is worth fighting for! It is!"

11:55pm Entertained by my Facebook friends' status updates wondering if we have to start worshiping Allah (no, seriously, someone said that) and threatening to leave the country (I'll help you pack!).

12:33am Obama's speech was as inspiring and perfect as expected. God bless America.

but seriously. i am sick and tired of having to be smarter, funnier, wittier, and more even tempered in order to get the same amount of respect as my white counterparts. i've faced bullshit racism at almost every law firm i've worked in. (dangling preposition, yeah, i know.) i've been followed in department stores. i've thought that there were certain things that i would just never be able to do.

barack obama has just SMASHED that feeling. little black kids, brown kids, green kids, whatever, are going to now know that they can do any fucking thing they put their mind to.

even if barack loses tonight, he has inspired a generation.

i'm excited.

and looking forward to tomorrow's hangover.

There are already problems here in St. Louis. A Repub poller had to be replaced after insisting on two forms of I.D. before voting. Paper ballots are also short on supply (why, I don't know) because no one is using the touch screen ballot, which I love, because people are becoming wise to the dangers of those touch screens being manipulated. The lines are HUGE. This was even before the end of work day. A lot of people must have taken the day off to vote. I was lucky. I live in a small suburb. I took the day off and voted at 10 a.m. No line.

@7 poo - sorta related - on my way home, i heard radio news people keep talking about this voter turnout breaking records from this century. "easily blowing other voter turnout records out of the water, becoming the most popular election this century"

I was #40 to vote, and he was #41. I didn't even know there were 40 voters in my precinct! (I live in a tiny town.) My hubby is obsessively switching channels between CBS and CNN.
