Rain Or Shine

For our readers fortunate enough to not be in the NYC area today, I'll give you a short summary of what the weather is currently like outside: Hell. It's freezing, windy and rainy (and my umbrella may or may not have imploded during my walk to Jossip HQ). Granted, I'm from Texas so anything below 60 degrees weirds me out, but the overwhelming majority opinion is that today is one of those days where you stay inside as much as possible.

Enter the PETA crazies, who heard that Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen would be at a Manhattan Barnes & Noble to sign copies of their latest book. No amount of bad weather was going to keep these people from lining up outside in those dumb Trollsen masks and frightening passersby.

One insane person's personal account of the protest, after the jump.

Because we love the fur-addicted Trollsen Twins sooooooo much, we were super excited when we heard that they'd be in New York today, just blocks from the PETA office here, doing a signing of their new book, Influence. (As far as I can tell, the book has to be a series of photographs of either Cruella De Vil or Anna Wintour—not that you can tell the difference). Well, we certainly couldn't miss such a great opportunity to visit them. So, figuring that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, we all put on our scary Trollsens masks, and off we went.

Would you believe that Hairy-Kate and Trashley wouldn't stop to talk with us? You'd think they didn't like our masks—and after we waited for them in the rain too! And what with me having gone to the same college as they did and everything (although I, ahem, graduated). Shameful, really—but what do you expect from girls who continue to promote the cruel and toxic fur industry, even after peta2 gave them the facts? Shameful, indeed.

That's right—the Trollsens never came out to say "Hi." That's OK, though—we got to talk to a lot of their fans (who knew they had fans?) and showed a lot of people the truth about the fur-loving Trollsens' "Full House of Horrors." (Can I point out that I'd never seen that video before? How had I never seen that video before?)

There's also a chance that I, in my Hairy-Kate mask, might have inadvertently terrified a small child. It's true, young man; the Trollsens are frightening. Beware.

Saritten–

PETA of course can't dictate what their volunteers do or wear (Wouldn't it be fabulous!) but the PETA employees who are there are most assuredly wearing non-leather shoes. PETA-policy. But there are some terrific non-leather alternatives that look just the same. It's sorta my thing to search for them. I <3 shoes and cows.

I never really liked the Trollsen idea, but it's the same argument as all the other PETA ideas. It gets press, every article about this spectacle DOES mention the horror of the fur industry, and they get results in the longrun.

Rainey– PETA is a 501 (c)(3) organization, which means they can't show any preference to any political organization or government entity. They'd lose their funding. Trust me, I'm sure PETA wants to call her out, and hard.

Chelsea I supported PETA when I first heard of the org, years ago, but all the sexist / obnoxious / retarded antics it has pulled have turned me off completely. I wouldn't give PETA a dime if it was lying on the sidewalk, now, and I know many others who feel the same way.

You may want to rethink that whole - "gets attention so it's a good thing," philosophy.

No. 14 Chelsea says:

They do get results actually. Check out http://www.peta.org/about/victories.asp for a pretty detailed list of accomplishments by year. I hate to just post a link, but I get pretty wordy here if I start listing them, and then no one pays attention anyway.

BUT…I do agree with everyone that the tactics are sometimes childish or silly, or just retarded. PETA's biggest move right now is to buy stocks in all the companies they hate. Just one or two, but enough to get an invite to all shareholder's meetings. And any shareholder is allowed to introduce proposals they think the company should take, and speak in front of all the other shareholder's, and the board has to vote on their proposal. It allows them to intelligently reach out to all the decision maker's in a company, and they've actually effected a lot of change that way. And it's not childish at all. Perhaps support that aspect of it?

And a big reason for the silly/stupid stunts, is that kids and teenagers like them. And it's a hell of a lot easier to get teenagers to go veg than adults. And kids are more willing to donate their time to something they feel passionately about. PETA has plenty of adult volunteers, doing different stuff than this, but you don't see it because it doesn't get press.

Actually, it's a bit sexist of you to assume it's exploitation. All the women involved WANT to be involved, and PETA has broccoli boys too, not just lettuce ladies.

No. 17 mirsada says:

Fine Chelsea your right, i should have said that naked women have absolutely nothing to do with animal rights and its completely idiotic for them to be naked. BTW where might i find these broccoli boys? they dont seem to be as promoted as much as the lettuce ladies.

No. 18 Chelsea says:

http://www.lettuceladies.com/broccoli_boys.asp

They don't get as much press the same reason Playgirl doesn't get as much press as Playboy. Also, have you not seen Ron Jeremy's naked PETA ad? Or Dennis Rodmans? Or tons of other guys? You're focusing on the women because that's what everyone focuses on.

And you're right, it doesn't have anything to do with animal rights. It has everything to do with getting a message out though, and getting press. And as everyone here can agree, PETA wants to make headlines. They make no bones about it. Still, it's not exploitation and I stand by my belief that you can do whatever you want with your body. Certainly better to use it for a cause if you want to flaunt it.

I highly doubt that your antics in the supposed shareholder board meetings are either real or effective.

Posted: Oct 29, 2008 at 12:38 pm
No. 21 Chelsea says:

Ruth–I went to the website and read a bunch of the articles. They mostly attack the celebrity endorsers of PETA. PETA's statement about that? Basically, you can't force anyone to go completely veg. And a spokesperson is very helpful. So if a celebrity is comfortable with an anti-fur pledge, or spay/neuter or whatever, PETA will use them. And they may change their mind on other issues as they work with PETA. Case in point? Alicia Silverstone. She started as a spay/neuter spokeswoman and now is entirely vegan and talks about animal rights every chance she gets. So PETA should ignore the help of a less than perfect person? The employees at PETA are vegan, and don't wear animal products, or anything else. And who are you to call someone a skank? That's just hateful because you don't like PETA's message. And it's tacky to do.

I'm glad you assume the shareholder meetings aren't real. When you can't find anything to argue with, just call it a lie. Nice tactic. http://tampabay.bizjournals.co.....ily18.html Oh, and they also do it at companies that test on animals, not just ones that serve them. Just because you don't like some aspects of PETA's business (though you seem to just dislike their celebrities) doesn't mean they don't do good.

No. 23 Ruth says:

PETA gets the rap they choose to get for objectifying women in their ads. They weren't innocently standing by while people chose to link them with the exploitative porn industry. Their spokeswoman Jenna Jameson said in her autobiography that she would lock her daughter in the house before letting her do porn, but PETA buys right into the culture of porn by putting naked porn stars in their ads. Their choice. The rap they have is their own fault, not "peoples."

Posted: Oct 29, 2008 at 1:39 pm
No. 24 Chelsea says:

Ruth, good to ignore all my other arguments. I take offense at the term objectify, but to each his own. We'll use your term. That being said, they don't just objectify women. Men too. They're equal opportunity objectifiers. And there's a difference between the porn industry and the exploitative porn industry. The exploitation takes place in low budget skeezy porn. Jenna Jameson is not exploited, nor is any of the 'celebrity porn stars' we see around. PETA has no problem with people who choose to do porn, and neither do I. Your body, your call. The rap I was talking about was when people call PETA ineffectual or childish, or anything like that. They do a lot of good, their mission is admirable, and if you really want to get rid of them, all you have to do is stop abusing animals.

Posted: Oct 29, 2008 at 1:49 pm
No. 25 Ruth says:

I buy exclusively non-animal tested products and I don't eat factory farmed meat. And I wouldn't touch anything having to do with PETA with a 10 foot stick. So you have "effectively" alienated even people who agree with your cause.

Posted: Oct 29, 2008 at 1:59 pm
No. 26 Chelsea says:

Again, not "you". I'm not PETA. But since you still eat meat (even though it's not factory farmed) and you presumably then consume also dairy and eggs and since you didn't mention it I assume (though correct me if I'm wrong! But I figured you'd just call yourself a vegan if you were) wear leather/fur/wool/silk, you're not someone who agrees with PETA's cause. There are vegans (and other animal lovers) who disagree with some of PETA's tactics though, but they're usually quick to agree that the shareholder resolutions and some other tactics are admirable, it's just the Trollsen-esque ones they don't like. And I already explained, those are designed to target teenagers. This is a peta2.com stunt and it's highly effective at it's target audience.

And while the meat you eat is from an animal who lived a better life than his factory farmed peer, remember that you are still eating an animal. And all I said was that if you want PETA to go away, you just have to stop abusing animals. Killing them falls under the abusing category for most people.

No. 27 Ruth says:

So if Peta's spokesperson Jenna Jameson stops fishing and eating seafood and abusing animals then - wait a minute - PETA supports people who don't follow it's own platform therefore it's platform will never be realized and it will continue annoying people forever!!!!! I think their real goal is to constantly be in the news, not bring about an end to animal cruelty.

Here's an example of how effective the attention getting stunts are with the "young people"

No. 28 Chelsea says:

I have no idea what your first sentence means. I read it three times and still nothing. So for now I'm ignoring it and hoping it's not relevant. If it is, feel free to rephrase. Moving on, I can definitely assure you that PETA's aim is to stop animal cruelty. They're the most well known animal rights organization in the world for a reason, sure. And it's because they get attention. But where people might not have batted an eye at a fur coat before, now when Jessica Simpson is in one, people always ask, where's PETA on this? Their influence has gotten a lot of people to stop wearing fur, stop eating meat, etc.

And your one example of a 'young person' is a 20 something who is most assuredly a lot closer to a 30 something seeing as how she's already graduated from law school. peta2 is aimed at TEENAGERS–people from 13-21. So it's invalid. And sure, there are still plenty of people I'm sure you can cite who hate PETA. But since there have been THOUSANDS of KFC demos held by peta2 kids across the country, I can name over a hundred thousand more who support the cause because of PETA's stunts.

Again, stop abusing animals and you'll stop hearing from PETA. Not really sure how to make it clearer.

So, Peta is now a sexist organization? That doesn't even begin to make any sense.

Since the advent of the organization, Peta has done an incredible amount of beneficial work with real results that never would've seen the light of day if not for their "antics". Get real and grow up!- so what, they're a big organization whose members are spanned across a spectrum of beliefs.

Stop being so lazy and just admit it's easier to stereotype Peta (and it's members) rather than question the ethics of your daily choices as it pertains to animal welfare. Forget even initiating positive change, just criticize an organization for its fringes and it'll make you feel all the better. That way you'll be so proud of yourself you won't realize how dumb and selfish you really are.
