This Is What We Meant By "Alas..."

ledgerbush

In light of the death of actor Heath Ledger, President Bush today postponed a press conference in which he would have promoted an anti-prescription drug abuse ad campaign. The White House said they canceled the event so as not to appear "opportunistic." This from people who won't even listen to the UN.

Don't you think a "preventing prescription drug abuse" campaign shouldn't be postponed due a death by POSSIBLE PRESCRIPTION DRUG ABUSE?

    So to recap:

George Bush cares about drug addicts.

He doesn't care about black people.

He's very conflicted about Whitney Houston.

White House press secretary Dana Perino said Bush's event had been scheduled for a while.
"We thought it would be better to postpone the event rather than run the risk of anyone thinking that we were being opportunistic in highlighting the issue," she said.

HA! They got so much shiat from being opportunistic TRUMPING UP A WAR, that has now been proved to be based on lies, they'll back out of anything. Wow. (or bush just wanted to golf with his Bank of America bros)

I say we blame the boys! You know how they are… especially Joe. He'd vote for satan himself if he ran a republican.

I tried to have a discussion with him after Rush Limbaugh got tagged for his little oxi-cotton ordeal (following his multiple rants concerning drug users.) You know his response? "Well that was different. He was talking about illegal drugs." My brothers are fuckin' idiots. (No offense Mom.)

Cord - Because Ledger has been confirmed as dead, we think the story should be over. Alas, it is not, nor will it be for days.

Hello Kettle, it’s me Pot - you’re black!
For those who disagree - when you have the power to actually stop spreading the story as the manager of content and then don't you are a hypocrite.

Just as Bush is a hypocrite - his cancellation has gotten more hype than the actual filming would ever have gotten, he is therefore being opportunistic by not being opportunistic. Why was there a need to announce the cancellation?

    Dear Tangerine,
Maybe I'm just a Blogoholic, and this is just the blog talking…sometimes, we say things that we wish were true but are not. Like, "I wish Britbrit knew where her deodorant was, alas, she doesn't and probably never will" It doesn't make us a hypocrite when we proceed to talk about her smells. I doubt Cord delights in the ways of the media frenzy surrounding a tragic death. But what can he do? It's not hypocritical, it's just…"I can't quit you".

This is really amazing. I was driving home from work yesterday and NPR announced his death and I thought "Huh, Heath Ledger died. Wonder what's up with that?" I had no idea it would end up being a huge deal. Is this symptomatic of our celebrity culture, or did he actually touch that many lives, and if he did, how did I miss that? That's not a facetious question, I am actually looking for feedback because I thought he was OK as an actor, and it does seem 28 is the magic number sometimes which makes for juicy sensationalist news, but I don't get how this has become a nearly global event important enough to dictate the actions of the White House.

Lily, Heath was a rising star, having moved from being just another pretty, talented actor to being an Oscar nominee (for a movie that kinda hit the zeitgeist jackpot, Brokeback and made him a household name) to now starring in the latest Batman movie so he was a big deal, pop culture wise. Plus all the little girls and gay men thought he was a hottie…see Anderson Cooper's sad-sack reporting of his death as an example. Poor Anderson probably had a poster of Heath in a cowboy hat over his bed. I know I certainly thought he was hot and although it's shallow and wrong, the death of hot young actors always gets to you (James Dean, etc.)

But then Chris Farley was certainly not hot and that was a real tragedy too.

    Maria - if you had the deodorant in hand and the power to give it to BritBrit then you would be a hypocrite if you did not do so;

Lovelee - lamenting something and being a part of said lamentable activity is actually the definition of hypocrite, from Websters "a person who acts in contradiction to his or her stated beliefs or feelings."

Also Lovelee - my point is not to tell anyone what to think,it was merely to point out the evident contradiction. The fact is we are all lookieloos on the celebrity highway where every incident or crash causes us to slow down and watch. To decry it or deny it is to be a hypocrite.

A thought on Heath - I'm surprised no one has mentioned his role in "Candy" which was a pretty hardcore drug film. Art/life life/art - that kinda thing.

He is a blogger and it’s his job to keep us in the know (thats why we come here). That’s why he's posting. so while personally he thinks it should be laid to rest, the other side of the coin is it’s his job.

So my question is Do I do my job or not because of my personal feelings?
