Fierce

America’s Next Top Model winner Whitney Thompson truly won the greatest prize of all: She was shot by noted fashion photographer Nigel Barker for a spread in Seventeen magazine. Whitney claims she’s a size 14, but she looks significantly smaller in these pictures ??? either she’s a liar or Nigel is just that good.

I’m a size 14 and she might be a little smaller but is she 14 in Juniors or womens? Given my belly is a bit bigger, but if I suck in it can look just like hers so I’m sure they are photoshoped and I can make myself a size 6 if I want in photoshop!

Why does her smile freak me out? Might be just me, but I really don’t like this “fat” girl.

Anya should have won, but I do appreciate them giving the nod to the “plus size” girl. I think she looks awesome in these pictures. Definitely smaller than a 14 (my guess would be a 10 or 12), but still she looks great. Good for her.

I’m with you Jen. I’m a size 14, I eat right and work out regularly and she and I do look about the same size as well. But I’ll bet her skin isn’t that smooth!

Also, I may get hell for saying this, but I don’t think it’s healthy to promote a plus size image to teenagers. I’m 35 years old plus I have had some medical issues that have made me carry more weight in the past and I do it in a healthy way, but it’s rare that a teenager should carry that much weight.

And in the next issue, Seventeen will run a stick figure on the cover and tell you how to get flat abs and amazing boobs. No mixed messages there.

No. 6 Fluffy T says:

Oh - I see they’re running the “flat abs” angle on THIS cover. hmmm… God, I hate “fashion” magazines.

I read somewhere that she’s a size 10. On the show she was definitely bigger than the other girls, but she never looked like a giant next to them.

SHE IS NOT PLUS-SIZED. It just makes me sick that ANTM and the world are bent on calling her plus-sized, it’s a slap in the face to us real fatties. While I agree with Fluffy T that it’s not good to promote a plus size image to teens, I don’t think any teen (or anyone else in their right minds) would think this girl is plus sized. Besides, she’s doing no more damage than the waifs who inspire so many young girls to stick their fingers down their throats or starve themselves thin. And I’m sorry, but that girl is not a 14, I’d say more like a 10 or 12.

it is possible that she’s a 14, although i do agree she looks more like a 10 or 12. but isn’t she a pretty tall girl? i’ve never seen the show, but aren’t all models relatively tall? that makes a difference in the size you wear. i’m 5′9 and weigh around 130 (depending on the day of the week), but can wear anything from a size 6 to a 12.

No. 10 maria says:

ginnipher,
WHAT? You cannot wear a size 12 @ 130lbs! I call shenanigans. Or maybe the twelve is euro sized or vintage(which tends to run smaller)? Also, perhaps you’ve got a big rack.

No. 11 ginnipher says:

i’m telling you, i’ve got size 12 jeans in my closet that i wear all the time.
i’ve found that the more expensive the item of clothing, the smaller the size runs. but go shopping at target and your ass can fit in a size 6, too!

and yes, maria, i’ve got “a big rack” :)

She could definitely be a size 14. She has large, yet toned, thighs. She looks good.

No. 14 kate says:

This girl could definitely be a size 14, depending on her height. Comparatively, I’m 5′11″ and am NOT getting any thinner. I weigh 160 but I have, as maria says, a big rack. :o) I have jeans in sizes 8 through 12. And I work my ass off so I don’t have that puff over my swimsuit bottom.

I think Whitney looks great and it’s disheartening that she’s categorized as plus-sized (as I would be). It would just be nice if we could erase that term and say they’re all just models. Define the word “models” as: beautiful women who are employed to display clothing, makeup, etc. Oh, and stop airbrushing the cellulite. We need to see the cellulite.

No. 15 Maeve says:

Yes, she can be a size 14. She’s 5′10″ or so, and you can be a size 14 at that height and not look “fat”

No. 16 Helen Skor says:

Maria, I was like Ginnipher back in the day. Weighed about 135 at 5′9″ and wore a size twelve. Man, I miss those days. Although I was really skinny, I always felt like a fatty because my friends were all considerably shorter and wore 4s and 6s.

No. 17 Leela says:

does anyone else think she looks totally deranged in these pictures, like she couldn’t quite pull off “happy”?

And she has no thumb in her photo wearing the ruffly bikini(that no one over the age of 6 should be wearing anyway…).

Oh, man, my cantankery is showing. Sorry.

No. 18 fezzig says:

I agree, Leela. I like Whitney, I think she’s lovely - but in most of those pictures, she looks a little….crazy.

Also, instead of “promoting plus size image”, I like to take the optimistic view of promoting different body shapes and sizes and being comfortable with yourself.

No. 19 kittenpaw says:

I think sizes are completely arbitrary. Whitney’s body is hot. I’ve seen size 2 women that are flabby and weird looking.

No. 20 Lale's a bit frightened by the teeth says:

She is certainly toothy in these shots. Maybe she’s misinterpreting “fierce” to mean animal-like.

I really wanted Anya to win, her personality was much better. I think Whitney is snobby and bratty. Oh and her face looks all kinds of frightful on that cover.

No. 22 EAS says:

I don’t understand how she is a size 14. The size 14 women I know weigh a hell of a lot more than she does. I don’t like that she is called “plus size” when she is clearly not. This just further convinces young girls that they need to be super skinny.

She looks good and healthy and pretty thin to me. I have no idea why she is considered plus size, unless they really, really Photoshopped those pictures a lot.

A friend of mine who is a devout viewer of ANTM says that Whitney never claimed to be a size 14 on the show, that she was down to a size 8 or 10 doing the course of the cycle. For what it’s worth.

No. 25 hms says:

She’s a big girl but she’s toned. I bet she’s a size 14, but when you are toned, it’s sexy. Bigger natural breasts, great shoulders, everything.

No. 26 ginnipher says:

helen- man, i’m so with you. how is it that i have less body fat than my friends, am much more tone, yet they still wear smaller sizes?
oh, cause i’m the freaking jolly green giant. being tall isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.
even if i could fit a size 4/5 pants around my waist, there’s no way they’d be long enough.
the bigger the size, the longer the leg.

Posted: May 20, 2008 at 4:36 pm
No. 27 kate says:

hey ginnipher, tall is great! at 5′11″, i have a 30″ waist and a 36″ inseam, and nary a roll around my middle. rock the height, own it, and all that :o) and remember, all those petite bitches wish they had your (our) height. guys worship tall women, tall people get more respect at work, and we can pull off all kinds of clothing that short people can’t. oh, and don’t get me started on high shelves.

No. 28 sarah says:

If you look at the quote in the first photo, it says “WHEN I wear a size 14…” which to my cynical mind indicates she’s not claiming to actually be a size 14 right now, just that maybe sometime in the past she’s been a 14.
I have no problems with her body - she looks great from the neck down. I don’t think her face is anything special and her smile is downright freaky. She looks deranged.
