The world’s richest clothes hanger, Gisele Bundchen, is blaming the plague of anorexia within the world of fashion on bad parenting rather than the extreme pressure from the industry to be thin. I’m pretty sure this could go down as some of the most irresponsible garbage ever said outside of an election year:
Supermodel Gisele Bundchen says weak families are to blame for anorexia — not the fashion industry that has been widely criticized for promoting waifish silhouettes…
“I never suffered from this problem (anorexia) because I had a very strong family base. Parents are responsible, not the fashion industry,” she said in the Friday edition of O Globo newspaper.
Gisele, 26, was visiting her native Brazil this week for Fashion Rio, which has banned models under the age of 16 and has required proof of their good health after the death of a Brazilian model from complications due to starvation last year. At the time of her death, 21-year-old Ana Carolina Reston was 5′8″ and 88 pounds…
…”Everybody knows that the norm in fashion is thin,” said the model who is 5′11″ and 125 pounds. “But excuse me, there are people born with the right genes for this profession.”
Thanks for that, Gisele.
Her statements come on the heels of Chanel’s Karl Lagerfeld stating, “We don’t see anorexic (girls)…The girls are skinny. They have skinny bones.” Ummm…they have “skinny bones?” So does everyone you ignorant dandy. Karl Lagerfeld, by the way, is the man at right who looks like the personification of “emotionally unavailable.”
Not only is what Gisele said uneducated and wrong, it’s dangerous. Without a doubt, some people are going to be thin based on their genes, thus making them better models. And, to some extent, unhealthy home environments certainly do play a part in eating disorders. However, to say that the fashion industry has nothing to do with anorexia, and that all the impossibly thin girls involved are that way because of genes, is the exact same kind of greedy, bullshit denial that kept tobacco companies going so strong for so long.
I don’t know what that John Mayer song was all about, but mothers, seriously be good to your daughters, because this is the vampirism they have to put up with all the time.

Thank you for posting this. This Gisele girl needs to educate herself before she elects herself a spokesperson for something as serious as anorexia.
Yeah Gisele, you might be 6″ taller than me, and 15 lbs skinnier, but I could kick your ass any day and twice on Sundays!
As a person recovering from ana (almost 10 yrs)…may I say- what a bitch.
I can understand what she is saying, if you are loved and well balanced from how the family raises you then you wont be pliable by peer pressure. In other words if you have a stable base you wont get f’cked up by other people’s expectations. Giz isnt a bitch.
I came from an upper class “normal” family, which was stable and supportive..which still brought its own problems.
Gisele needs to stick to what she’s good at, which is dressing pretty, being thankful for her “right genes”, and keeping her pouty mouth shut.
One more thing- it’s LIABLE not PLIABLE.
“In other words if you have a stable base you wont get f’cked up by other people’s expectations.”
There are PLENTY of people from supportive, healthy families that devlop eating disorders. I’m in a PhD program for clinical psychology, and believe me, I’ve done lots of reading on the subject. EDs, particularly anorexia, mostly develop as a result of feeling like one has a lack of control over their life, which very often has NOTHING to do with his/her upbringing or family life. What Gizelle said was ignorant at best, not to mention that she comes off as a total bitch.
Giselle needs to remember that there is a place for fat girls in modeling, too. For those chubsters who were not blessed and are, say, an ample size 6, there is plus-sized work. It’s a source of hope and inspiration for all of us.
Maybe by “right genes” she meant that models are biologically inclined to deprive themselves of calories. ..
Well said, Cord! I read this quote earlier and I was waiting for someone to call Gisele out on this bullsh*t. As someone from an extremely supportive, loving home who still managed to develop an eating disorder, I was pissed when I read Gisele’s quote. I’ve spent a good deal of time trying to convince my mother of her adequacy (adequitecy?) as a parent. So thanks for your eloquence, Cord.
Good job Cord. Well said. I’ve always liked Giselle, but no way no how should she ave said those things.
Cord, thanks for this post and the excellent links.
I can’t believe how irresponsible and ridiculous her words are. And, correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t Karl Lagerfield use to be grossly overweight like just 5 years ago? He must have gotten a “skinny bones” replacement.
Nice.
Anytime a supermodel opens her mouth, I just want to hit the mute button.
She’s bringing bad karma on herself.
I agree with what chichi commented. Having said that, hubby and I just completed a 3 mile hike and are NOW famished! Time to go grub out at dinner! CIAO!
“I can understand what she is saying, if you are loved and well balanced from how the family raises you then you wont be pliable by peer pressure. ”
Oh big bullSHIT. Anorexics and bulimics come from perfectly stable, supportive families as well. So do drug addicts, alcoholics, etc. If you think simply loving your kids and giving them balance will save them from peer pressure, you’re hopelessly out of touch.
Cord, this is why I love you more than Molly. Sorry Molly. But Cord posts on the weekends.
I have the most loving and supporting parents in the world I was still bulemic in high school. Maybe Ms. Giselle should think before she says such stupid things. It’s not the parents’ fault.
I think her comments are a symptom of the fact that beauty is currency. The scarcer something is (a certain body type) the more valuable it is and the more people will seek it out. It’s nothing new. Blaming mass media for bombarding girls with images of “ideal” should also include blogs like this and all those that this one links to for cataloging every flaw of the people most in the public eye. Not only does it make people more aware of their own shorcomings but it feeds our animalistic desires to compete with one another. I’m not saying it shouldn’t happen because I sure come here often.
I MISS MOLLYGOOD
no, i think it goes “good golly miss molly”.
To Kat- nice dig at the fatties with your 3 mile hike comment. Not everyone that gets annoyed by dumb models is jealous or fat, ya know.
As a mom of twin girls afraid of what the future is for them (on every level) I’m sooo disappointed to hear this statement!! Frankly, there are enough studies to show that the media absolutely contributes if not directly impacts eating disorders. Even posting stories on an eating disorder increases its prevalence!!!
Gisele seems to be another irresponsible, out-of-touch celebrity enjoying the spoils of her wealth without consequence. Shame on her for being so arrogant and self-centred.
It’s obvious that she’s in a profession that lets pretty people say whatever they want and it’s considered enlightened or some crap like that. She’s a moron people. She’s a model; her job revolves around vacant stares and carrying a some teacup poodle around.
As for Karl Lagerfeld, yes, the man who dresses like a gay Shakesperean pirate is also under the assumption that Lindsay Lohan is a genius - seriously, he said that. Remember that when you see jeans priced at $350.
BTW Cord, you comment about ignorant dandy and emotionally unavailable made pepsi shoot out of my nose.
You go, Cord. You’re not Molly, you’re you. And I like you. Like what you seem to stand for.
A) Lindsay Lohan is a genius. She owns the media.
B) Giselle is not…she went out with Leo for goodness sake! Leo “my high point was Titanic and I think people should respect me for it” DiCaprio
C) There is a growing sub-culture that promotes anarexia (see thinspiration, ana sites, ana myspace groups) that need to have THERAPY! It is such an obsession with these young gals not to be thin, but to long to be it the most and be the most thin. It’s utterly sick.
D) CORD, you may be un-mollyish, but you are still GOOD!
Gisele isn’t anorexic sillies, she just doesn’t LIKE to eat food. It must be genetic…
ok great…you were born w/ good genes for modeling..but what about your FACE? I think she proves the fact that models are sucessful because they are skinny and not pretty. Look at Kate Moss…these two are fug, but skinny as hell.
Cord you toally rock!!! I never thought of the tie in with the tobacco companies but you are so right!!! This blog is fast becoming my favorite…. it is intellectual & really puts things in persepctive! Great Cord!
Shame on you cord for calling words ‘dangerous.!!! I can’t believe someone who makes thier life publishing woudl ever put up an argument for censorship, which is what this sounds like.
Individuals are responsible for their own actions regardless of what words they hear or read or what is popular in society.
Karl Lagerfeld is in idiot but Gisele is spot on. Parents need to instill srong values and sense of self in their children so that they are able to resist the myriad of bad influences in society. Fashion is not the only place where people encounter inticements to get invovled with self desctructive behavior.
“Calling words dangerous sounds like censorship?” By that logic, were I to call guns dangerous, it would mean I was advocating disarming the world. Or, by saying that the job of a bike messenger is dangerous, it would mean that I want all bike messengers removed from New York City. Before making wild assumptions, read what I said.
Like it or not, when discovered by people at unstable points in their life, words can be dangerous. Give an intelligent, rational, stable person Mein Kampf, and they get an interesting, depressing read about a sad, broken man’s life. Give a depressed, damaged youth Mein Kampf, and you get a neo-Nazi. That’s not censorship. That’s the truth.
If the person is unstable they will find someway to self destruct. It’s not the fault of teh words they read or hear, or the writer.
Cordofrahab please tell us you’re not a writer or something because your ability to spell sucks (although we commend your use of the word “Myriad”, did you use Word thesaurus for that one?) Oh and nice use of passive voice…
Before you rag on Cord’s prose check your own!
Keep up the dangerous words Cord! Love ya!
Your ad hominem attacks do nothing to bolster the argument, I’m assuming you agree with cord, that words can be dangerous in and of themselves?
i know my posts are full of spelling typos. Please explain how that makes my argument right or wrong? It doesn’t.
If people are unbalanced(i.e. grew up with trauma or had no morals instilled in them or no sound family structure or support) they will be prone to self destructive, dangerous or violent behavior regardless of who says what when or where.
Too bad her “model genes” didn’t follow through to her face… Yikes.
Great post, Cord! I’m totally with you.
“BEFORE YOU RAG ON CORD’S PROSE, CHECK YOUR OWN.” Nothing to do w/ right or wrong, you just come off as kind of an idiot. These blogs wouldn’t survive a day w/out ad hominem attacks, isn’t that why we read these snarky articles?
And as a counterpoint, in my personal experience, people that grow up balanced, with supportive families, etc etc can also still be prone to destructive/dangerous behaviour. I say this because I did it for years, and I come from a good family.
Hey, at least we agree that Karl Lagerfeld is an idiot!
They can be but are less likely to be so. Whereas almost everyone who grew up in a troubled environment will be prone to trouble themselves until they deal with their issues somehow.
You know it is easy for someone who looks like Giselle to say “My parents brought me up right, so I know I’m good looking”. Hello you are good looking!! If you looked like Ugly Betty (the character not the actress) would you except that as easily as Giselle? I don’t think so!!
What people like Giselle should be teaching young girls and guys is. Sexy is a state of mind, not a state of body. Giselle try to remember that you are a roll model for young people!!
Cordofrahab:
What a blanket “dangerous” statement! All people from bad families are troublesome, dangerous and violent? I come from a very stable, supportive and loving family - and have plenty of issues to deal with on my own.
And, in regards to the spelling typos - although it doesn’t make your argument right or wrong it sure detracts from coming off as intelligent. Don’t expect to be taken seriously when you can’t spell the words “the” or “strong” correctly when on counter-attack.
GOOD GENES?!?! That bitch needs to get off her high horse… she’s had both her nose and her tits done…
Hey kids, save the nature vs. nurture argument for 10 years ago. Can everyone here really say that they have never bought an ugly shirt just because it was trendy, or opted for those awful bangs, or tried to fit into those pants that make you look like 10lbs of flour in a 5lb bag? Some people buy into trends, some people buy new noses and tits, and some people buy a burger but can’t keep it down. Looks matter, and rather than try to convince the chubby girls that they don’t, parents should make sure their daughters have an awesome sense of humor, you know…just in case.
this woman is flawless. doesn’t really matter what she says. i am fairly certain that she never scored a modelling contract based on her intelligence quotient.
beijos
Giselle- shut up and look pretty that’s your job.
no ones paying for your opinions.
I would somewhat agree with her on this one.Although I’m sure the main reason is the fashion industry,I also feel parenting plays a role as well. For instance if you grow up in abusive surroundings most likely you have no self esteem and this can play a big role on eating disorders. If you were never taught to love yourself or if you weren’t minded that you are loved time to time you’ll always feel unworthy and never be happy with yourself mentally or physically.
“Without a doubt, some people are going to be thin based on their genes, thus making them better models.”
Making them better models? I don’t understand how being skinnier makes you a better model… take a look at any of the ANTM cycles and tell me that every skinny chick on there was a “good model”.
Anyway, listening to Gisele oin this is like listening to Paris Hilton saying, “I don’t know why there are so many poor people”. She has no genuine credibilty, to speak of.
I don’t know what Gisele is talking about with all this ‘genetics’ stuff. The only thing her genes gave her is the height of the jolly green giant. Her body looked like a 15-year-old boy’s body before she got the boob job. And despite her nose job, her face still looks very manly. So she shouldn’t be commenting on other people’s flaws and problems without looking in the mirror herself.
But for those of us who watch ANTM, we know the models with the “interesting” transvestite look are the ones they like the best.
And to take all the blame off the fashion industry is ridiculous. It was the designers who decided their clothes looked better on coat hangers than on real peopleand then broadcast those stick figures around the world via mass media. Before this happened, Marilyn Monroe was the ultimate symbol of beauty, and she was a size 14!
But Gisele doesn’t want to bite the hand that feeds her.
Btw, what happened to all the beautiful super models like Cindy Crawford, and Heidi Klum? I’m sick of all these stick-thin hermaphrodites! I want Tyra Banks back!
