Spending Money and Costing Lives With Bono

lead

Remember when I told you that the Vanity Fair/Bono collaboration was purely wasteful bullshit? Well now the good, insightful, like-minded folks over at Radar have taken things a couple steps further and gathered data about exactly how wasteful that bullshit was. For instance: "The budget of a relatively cheap Hollywood blockbuster, $150 million, could buy enough mosquito netting to help prevent 30 million Africans from contracting malaria." And did you know that the budget for the photo shoot that produced the covers for that issue could have paid for thousands of computers for poor African children? Graydon, you got some 'splaining to do!

this is just another thing that hollywood is doing to feel good about itself. if annie and all these folks really care about this cause, why didn't she do it for free, or donate her salary to charity. it's the same with "band aid". it didn't actually raise any money for africa, it just brought "awareness" to it. instead of us pouring a ton of money into a continent that is overrun with corrupt people that pay men to rape and mutilate women, why don't we hold those said "governments" accountable and charge them with human rights violations? i'm all for helping, but it seems to do no good if you pay to drill a well only for it to be blown up or filled with dirt by people working for the man.

Laptops for impoverished Africans? What are they going to do…eat them? That is ridiculous. Why don't we teach them to fish instead of giving them a laptop?

Why is that ridiculous? Internet access is an amazing resource. Obviously they would go to villages with SOME infrastructure. People wouldn't be wildly banging at keys in a mud hut with no electricity.
    Best,

It pains me to say I have a subscription to this magazine and on Monday, I got my "Bono" issue. I ended up getting the Bush and Condi cover. Those two care about Africa as much as Lohan cares about rehab. Graydon, you fat rich self righteous asshole, you DO have some explaining to do.
