Christian Values

obamabutton

This past weekend's Texas Republican state convention was a breeding ground for people who love their Bibles, guns and George W. Bush. I'm generalizing, but, coming from a small Texas town, I can assure you the stereotype holds true more often than not. These buttons, which were sold at the convention, prove my point (and remind me why I left the state to begin with).

    How idiotic. They make every republican look racist and 11th grade. I don't know how wide-spread those are, but it's terrible that they even exist.

    But can't you be a proud republican Jew? Or is Christianity their only religion? Seriously, are there any other religions that vote Republican?

    I don't trust your 'assurance' because I live in TX and I've never seen even one of these buttons.

    @P.S.

    I'm not implying that everyone wears those buttons, because I doubt hardly anyone does. What I said was that the stereotype about the gun-loving, God-fearing, gay-hating Republicans is very true, as I grew up with it for 18 years. And, as ridiculous as the buttons sound, I have heard way too many people who actually think that way.

    Hot Librarian, I'm glad I'm not the only one who didn't get the McCain button.

    P.S., I understand what Whitney is saying. I live in Tennessee, and those of us that are open-minded are few and far between. Most people ARE gun-loving, God-fearing, gay-hating Republicans. That's not to say that EVERYONE is, but the vast majority. Just because you don't see it doesn't mean it's not there.

    I live in a small southern town with conservative values. I am a gun-toting Christian (yes, I have a permit). Most of the people I know are educated well past the level of whoever thinks those buttons are funny or appropriate. I hate that people look at people like me and automatically make assumptions about who I am and what I think. I'm a Republican who happens to be voting for Obama, and I'm not alone. The conventions are just orgies of mass stupidity. You just can't lump everyone into one category. Sorry - this is a soapbox issue for me.

    I'm with Whitney on this one. I live in Plano, a north Dallas suburb (for those who don't know). I don't know if it would be possible for this place to be more conservative.

    I know Plano. I enjoy shopping there but try not to stay too long for fear I may accidentally get botoxed. I'm east of Dallas. It's all about the boob jobs here. But I live near one of the biggest churches out here. Stepford, anyone? I always have to watch my big mouth. I've lost a friend or two over the whole pro-choice thing. Keep it surface down here.

    And I agree with Fluffy - not ALL Republicans think this way. In order to begin ridding ourselves of racism, we must think of ourselves and everyone else as an individual, and back away from developing a group or victim mentality. Racism is collectivism, a really bad type of collectivism.

    Guess what! I know ignorant conservatives and I know ignorant liberals. A doodee is still a doodee regardless of its political leanings. This site just happens to be a soap box for those who lean to the left. It's like preaching to the choir! I am Catholic and resent the constant religion bashing. Maybe if people on both sides REALLY practiced their so called beliefs, all of the constant bashing would cease. There, I said it.

    I am going to have to use the word "doodee" a lot more from now own. My friends and I have been emailing back and forth about this topic all day long at work (ok - "work"). This prompted lots of emails to others, especially when I sent this to everyone in our school district's email:

    "Oh my goodness, look at the big scary black man frightening all the dainty little saintly white people. HA! This is propaganda – not research. Investigate and read on your own, but I am not interested in anything but facts backed up with actual sources (FOX News is NOT a “source”). Try to actually think for yourselves and do your own research every once in a while. Just like cows on a farm – these people only eat what they’re given and they have no idea of what’s available to them outside of the little box they live in. Nor do they have the mental capacity to grasp a larger world outside of their own. Grown, “intelligent” people acting out of fear caused by the racism they declare they don’t harbor is sad and pathetic."

    I don't think they're going to be inviting to the BBQ's any more! Dangit - I really like free food.

    @tlk and Melissa:

    As a proud Texan and Christian, I can assure you the point of this post was not to criticize Texans or Christianity. I love where I came from and I love my religion — that aside, this post is about those who give us a bad rep. I can name many people from back home who go to church every Sunday, yet constantly hold racist views.

    That's the point I'm trying to make: Christianity is not about judgment, but these people selling the buttons represent those I grew up with who practice a religion that preaches tolerance yet pick and choose what Biblical quotes they care to live by. Why accept others like Jesus did when we can refuse to vote for a candidate because he's black and shun the gay community? It's ridiculous, and it's one of the few topics that gets me on my soap box.
