Weird Science

johncoleman

A victory for the crackpots yesterday, so plan on hearing about it for the next 10 to 12 years.

John Coleman, the crotchety 73-year-old man who two decades ago created the piddling Weather Channel, told an audience at the 2008 International Conference on Climate Change that the station he founded is now controlled more by finance than benevolence, and that it covers up what he calls "the fraud of global warming." Surely Coleman was indirectly admonishing Heidi Cullen, a pinko ninny currently with The Weather Channel, who in 2006 stated on her blog that meteorologists who doubted human influence on global warming should be decertified.

In the past, Coleman has said that the scientifically accepted idea of harmful climate change due to greenhouse gases is "the greatest scam in history."

After the jump, Coleman's dotage, for all to see!

And how much did the current administration pay this fool to say that, anyway?

if you havent research the facts yourself you cant say for sure whether global warming is bull or not. If you dont, your just repeating what he said/she said and that's no better.

I listen to scientists, the majority of whom say climate change is being exacerbated by human influence. So um, yeah.

Yes, the last UN report stated that with 90% certainty, but they could not quantify the effect. Do we (humans) contribute 50%, 5%, .05%, .00000005% - it kinda makes a difference. The Keeling curve is linear and constant for the past 50 years or so, "background carbon dioxide as measured at remote sites has been increasing in the atmosphere at an almost linear rate of about 1.4ppmv per year ever since 1972. The rate seems to be unaffected by the large increase in emissions form combustion of fossil fuels over the period (4.4Gt in 1972 to 6.4Gt in 1995, an increase of 45%)."

Whether global warming is a scam or not (I don't think it is), there is still something that needs to be done regarding the vast amount of waste that we humans consume. Think about it, humans are the only animals that create true waste. If you want to believe that global warming is a crock, that is your right to do so, it still doesn't change the fact that our rivers, air and soil are being polluted by our overconsumption of toxic substances. Its not a far stretch to assume that if our rivers, soil and air are being polluted, that there wouldn't be some sort of external side effect pertaining to weather.

It doesn't matter if global warming is happening or not. Less consumption, taxes on production and more equitable distribution of resources around the world are desirable side effects of anti-global warming efforts thus if belief in global warming is a means to this end, I'm for it, and we all should be too. A global warming denier should be treated just like a racist or homophobe.

That sounds very enlightening….believe the way I tell you to or become a villified outcasted member of society. How very Crusades-like of you.

I really don't care if people believe in global warming or not. I don't see how people can argue with all the evidence out there, but a lot of people would say the same thing about a little thing called religion. There's literally no proof that God exists, yet that doesn't stop people from believing in it/him/she/whatever. I do care, however, about people just being socially and environmentally responsible. Americans are obsessed with having things. We need need need everything and for what? Do you really need that gas guzzling car? Do you really need a new Ipod every year? Do you really need everything overly sanitized and individually wrapped in plastic? The answer to all of these questions is no. I think the sheer vastness of our waste is going to bite us all in the ass before the ice caps melt.

Besides that, we are simply growing out of our space on the planet. Nature is like that, we can't save everyone or everything - disease for a long time kept the population under control, however, now that we have vaccinations for just about everything (or ways to manage diseases), there isn't a population control mechanism in place. Unfortunately, I think that we are our own biggest enemies and will likely contribute more to our own downfall than any illness we can think of.

people argue with the evidence because there have been massive climate changes throughout the existence of earth. Deserts were once utopias, the ice age, possible polar shifts … I'm not saying it's real or not because I don't think until more time has passed, anyone can know for certain.
