Looking Back

And the point of this whole thing is to win. But the other point, equally important, is to look back and say, "How did I play the game? How did I do it? Did I do the things that I wanted to do? And did I do the right thing? Or am I kind of embarrassed? Do I regret that I ran that ad or did something?" The older you get, the more you're concerned about your place in history. And I'm very concerned about my place in history, and I just wouldn't do that stuff. It's not worth it.
-John McCain, friend of known liar Joe the Plumber, ACORN-baiter and McCarthyist, in an interview on the campaign trail in 2000

Mmmmmmmmmmm… That's some good irony.
Sure is…so glad Obama hasnt been associated with any lying in his campaign…oh wait…crap….
and now he'll go down in history as running the most vile and dirty campaign ever (so far).
good for you McCain, you've become what you railed against in 2000 when Bush did it to you.
Can you name something where Obama has been proven a liar jane? Or are you just venting?
JD, she's probably referring to his promise about public financing.
that's the only true "lie" that I've heard.
every other "lie" they claim is pure speculation.
Most of the McCain supporters that haven't switched over aren't even informed enough to recall that financing issue.
Though I can't blame Obama for taking public donations. Even the troops are giving money 6:1 over McCain. I'd justify that one by saying he simply took advantage of the fact that the large majority of the people of this country would rather have him in office than McCain. If McCain could raise the same kind of money, he wouldn't be mentioning it.
You can't possibly convince me that Obama has been any more truthful in his campaigning. You may side with his ideals more, but this has been the scariest election. Who do you pick? Worse or worser? You're telling me these two are the best our country has to offer?
JD - Just curious. . .where did you see that about the troops giving money 6:1 over McCain?
Actually, I think Obama is a terrific candidate for President Kate–the first we've had in awhile. This is a man who actually wants to make America great, and not some self serving asshole. There's a reason there are so many people behind him.
And the public donations debacle? Puh-lease. Good for Obama for taking the money. The elitists that McCain alienated need somewhere to throw their money and support.

Ah! where were you when I needed you word press? I hit enter twice, and you left me alone! Damn you!
Don't listen to Jane. She's a goddam retard. Her husband and I laugh at her fat ass all the time.
the thing is, I liked the old McCain. What happened? He pandered to the right wing ultra conservative whack jobs and the pussy-ass young repub chicken hawks that didn't want to possibly get their hands dirty holding an M16, when they could send the "poor folk" to do it. Add on the special interests, and the old fucker caved. The funny thing is, even with all his ass kissing, the republican higher ups still don't accept him. He doesn't have the "wagons circling" support that past candidates enjoyed. Talk about irony.
Kate, jane made an accusation that he's been lying.
so, jane should back that up with something concrete. Simply saying "You can't possibly convince me that Obama has been any more truthful in his campaigning." is no evidence that he's been lying. it's purely your conjecture.
so, what are the lies that YOU are so convinced that he's telling?
It's all conjecture isn't it? Both opponents have articles and press about their campaigns and both good things and bad. So really, it's a personal choice who they think will do the best for this country. Just because someone is able to back up their statement with a link doesn't mean it will change anyone's mind. Both candidates are horrible in my opinion. Sorry i don't have a website to direct you to.
I'm not defending Jane and I'm not saying Obama out and out lied about anything (other the campaign finance thingy) but both candidates haven't told the whole truth. They tell their version of the truth that makes their case for them. Do you want to call that lying? I don't know. But go to factcheck.org. Neither has told the absolute truth.
I have a friend that isn't voting because she believes all politicians are lying scumbags. But of course, she doesn't do anything to help the community or work for a better goverment. Just bitching and being lazy.
no, kate, it's not all conjecture.
the lies that mccain's campaign has been spewing about Obama have been PROVEN TO BE LIES.
yes, it is a personal choice, and I, for one, would rather "take a gamble" on something than stick with something that ISN'T WORKING.
you have your vote, I have mine…Just remember to go out and cast it, either way!
BTW, you KNOW it's getting bad when even FOX NEWS is defending Obama.
Anyway, five minutes with Joe The Plumber had Shepard Smith so frustrated that the Fox anchor felt compelled to issue a disclaimer, immediately following the segment, pushing back on any notion that Obama would mean the "death of Israel," saying: "I just want to make this 100 percent perfectly clear — Barack Obama has said repeatedly and demonstrated repeatedly that Israel will always be a friend of the United States, no matter what happens once he becomes President of the United States. His words." Smith later added, "The rest of it — man…some things — it just gets frightening sometimes. We'll be right back."

yeah, yeah, I know the source is Huff Post, but I saw the footage myself.
say what–spoken like a true liberal! You want people to vote even if they aren't voting for the candidate you support… I don't have anything to add, I just think that's fabulous. Go Lady Liberty!
wtr, I've been hearing that on news and talk radio a lot. Here's one link: http://www.opensecrets.org/new.....ve-61.html
Kate, I'm not trying to convince you of anything. At most I just ask that you try to be informed as possible before you vote. But as far as Obama being a bad candidate, I think we've had and currently have worse. I think Obama's pretty genuine and has (from my own personal research) offered more solutions to the country's problems than McCain. I think I've been flooded with one negative ad from McCain after another that aren't even based on reality. I think Obama's approach to healthcare, and withdrawing our troops from Iraq will benefit us more than McCains.
Kate, I can sympathize with your choice of picking the lesser of two evils. I felt that way when it was Kerry/Bush. This choice is rather easy for me though. the differences couldn't be more stark.
word, Chelsea…
because that's how us dirty pagan liberals roll!
There's also this slightly more recent ad, wtr: http://hamptonroads.com/2008/1.....-donations
kp - people like your friend are part of the problem because they aren't part of the solution - just like most of us. It's easy for us to say that we want a change, but what are we REALLY doing to affect that change? And I'm no different than the majority of folks, just so you don't think I'm being all "holier than thou" - I am 33 years old, and this will be the first time I've ever voted in a national election. Sad, but true. It's not really up to politicians to bring about change - it's up to each of us. America became a great nation because people worked hard to make it that way. But recently, we've become self-important jerks and the laughing stock of the civilized world.
I think it's tragic that a man who has done as much for this country as John McCain has feels the need to sacrifice his core values just to try to win an election. People 30 years from now aren't going to remember him for his accomplishments - they are going to remember him as the man who played dirty.
Helen, I'll also remember McCain as a veteran who served his country, but yes, what will really stick in my memory is that he used his last chance at the presidency to sell his principles to secure the anointing of the GOP.
Did Obama actually lie or did he reassess and change his mind? If he simply decided to change his plans after further evaluation, I applaud him.
If certain other politicians had had the strength of character to say we’ve made an error in judgment and we need to change course then perhaps Bin Laden and his minions would by now have been relegated to nonissue status instead of continuing to be a threat to us and to our way of life.
I know that the debate about campaign financing pales in comparison to the arguments for and against the way that the “War on Terror” had been waged; I’m simply speaking in terms of strength of character and how it relates to the ability to admit when one is wrong.
Dee– I've never seen you around here before, but I <3 the way you think!
JD, thanks for the links although I believe that second one is not actually about the troops but about the defense industry, i.e. contractors.
Dee, I second what Chelsea said.
let's all remember that when asked what mistakes he's made during his pResidency, our current pResident said "I can't think of any".
yes, Dee, it speaks volumes about one's character.
For me I like that a person can reassess a situation and decide to go another way as long as they come out and admit what they thought, what they now think and their reason for changing their mind. But in politics, everyone considers it flip-flopping which is evidently taboo. Remember John Kerry?!
Dee, you have hit the nail on the head. I don't think most voters are as concerned about the financing issue as the republican camp thinks they should be.
By the way, does anyone know: if Obama has a ton of cash left over after the election, what happens to that money? Because wouldn't it be great if he could funnel that money into social welfare programs, scholarships, or something of the sort? what are the rules and regulations about that?
I know - I don't understand the flip flopping charge either - especially if someone thinks about something and makes a rational decision to change their mind (not just saying it to get elected).
For instance, I once thought shamrock shakes were awesome. I now think they are totally disgusting.
I can't imagine that Obama would have any money left the way he is spending.
Just checked out the Fox News website (hey, I need my giggles just like everyone else), and they are kicking the Obama smear campaign into high gear. I love to see Murdock panic.
Great, what's the lie today?? I swear, the McCain campaign is literally just pulling one smear after another out of their pockets and will run with anything that seems to stick for even 5 minutes. What a joke their entire campaign has become!!!
I once thought big time wrestling was real.
You mean it's not, Roddy? For shame.
Mccain is just treading water at this point, and growing weary . . .
McCain has aged 10 years since January. He really has gone from being a hero in my eyes to the old man screaming at kids to get off his lawn. Obama's relative youth and calm demeanor seem to me to be more presidential. Thanks, John, for your service to our country. Now, be of greater service and stop this dirty smear campaign. It's disgraceful.
::cheers for say what?:: holding it down! (all conjecture? really??????)
with 4 days to go, i'm not even going to bother pointing out how ridiculous it is for the GOP to be complaining about the money that obama raised, the first 30 something million of whichcame from individual donors. sour grapes, yo!
the gop is just jellis!!!!111
but yeah, i'm not going to bother to point that out.
what i would like to do is throw up a spirited middle finger to anyone who is ACTUALLY undecided at this point. i mean really? REALLY? these fools have been campaigning for nearly a year and you're UNDECIDED?
also, i would like to point out that in florida, some pollster polled people who had ALREADY VOTED, and 6%—SIX PERCENT—claimed they were undecided.
in most states, about 1% claim to be undecided after voting, and pollsters assume it's because some people refuse to ever reveal their vote.
but SIX PERCENT???
florida!!?? COME ON!!!
::gob voice::
@Chelsea No. 19– say what? is a terror ist! and a social ist! and a muslin! and a christian!

gah!!!!
i bet say what? would spell her name with a "U" if she could! right say whut? ??
gah!!!!
oh god, i need a drink already.
much love, y'all.
peas and queues.
stephen colbert described bush's inability to admit that he is wrong perfectly:
"The greatest thing about this man is he's steady. You know where he stands. He believes the same thing Wednesday that he believed on Monday, no matter what happened Tuesday."
also, i think the lesser of two evils meme just doesn't apply here. to me, it applied in 2004 when i held my nose and voted for kerry. but not this year, people!
woohoo! 4 days!
Not that he would have had my vote (I'd rather give it to Nader) does it seem to anyone else that Republicans kind of just threw this election away once they acknowledged that the economy was in the dumps. If I were writing this screenplay, John McCain and his advisors would recognize that the economy is going to be shit for the next few years, select Sarah Palin as a running mate to pretend like they're trying to be progressive and trying to pretend she's at all a good choice or an intelligent or good person, intentionally lose the election, come back (as a party) in 2012 and point out how the Democrats who have been in charge for the past four years haven't been able to do anything to establish a more stable economy.
Just a thought…more like a ramble. I don't even really know if it makes any sense written but in my head its clear as Crystal Pepsi (circa 1992)
WHAT?Seriously, WHAT happened to McCain????!!!!
