The author of the above is right about one thing: If one is not a rabid homophobe, based on this video, there is little reason to loathe Chris Crocker. But rest assured, he's terrible, and here's why…
The meteoric rise of Chris Crocker is inauspicious in a way that should make decent people feel the trepidation they experience when dreaming of falling. Chris Crocker is a tailspin. His whining, his idiocy and his imbalance are literally too much to bear, and yet the ink's just dried on his television deal. Miserable, I know. But big whoop, because there's lots of awful people on TV. Not like this kid, though.
Up until recently, Chris Crocker was homeschooled and living with his grandparents in Tennessee. Assuming (safely, I'd imagine) that his social life was a strained one, one of his only outlets was creating characters with which to entertain faceless YouTubers and himself. Sad, no? And that's the point: Chris Crocker is someone for whom reality doesn't exist. For years, he was a shut-in who digitally fantasized about being other people, thereby muddying his clear sense of self. (Sorry if you think otherwise, but sane people don't have emotional meltdowns in which they wail and sob in defense of drunk famous people.) Were Crocker the star of a reality show, viewers would be exposed to any number of his well-honed characters, but little to no reality. And giving him, say, a sitcom would be an even greater disservice to his retarded development, allowing him to profit from his absurdity while continuing to avoid reality. And the reality is this: Chris Crocker is a dim, poorly informed, celebrity-obsessed, emotionally stunted kid, and he needs to come to terms with the fact that many people dislike him not because he's gay, but because he's tremendously irritating.
Everyone – especially those bearing contracts – needs to leave him alone and let him get some help.

I rarely agree with you, as I feel as though you are abrasive to an unnecessary degree. However, I vehemently agree that we should collectively as a race turn a blind eye to this debacle known as Crocker. I am embarassed that our culture hands him a contract as a reward for his histrionic personality issues. It would be easier to ignore him if he were not on posts, though.
it's not that he's a swish gay young man. that can be fun, and entertaining, and i do theatre so i'm used to it. (sidebar: i do think the pressure a lot of LGBTQ people seem to feel to take up the stereotype in order to be accepted in the community is really unfortunate.) it's not his gender ambiguity, his orientation, or even his squeaky, stereotyped voice. no, rather it's how much he reminds me of this biotch i hated in 8th grade. same prissy preening, same crappy hotter-than-thou dance moves, same pointless ennui, same making a spectacle of yourself on the internet to attract the attention of your peers, and also creepy old guys. Cord's right, his nibs over here needs to take some time off and try a life of quiet desperation, instead of very very loud and annoying desperation.
Our culture is responsible for Flavor of Love, Who Wants to Marry a Multimillionaire, The Simple Life, and the Anna Nicole show. MTV got its highest ratings in years for the VMAs largely due to Brit's trainwreck performance. There aren't many depths our culture wouldn't sink to, so long as it means a bunch of voyeurs (myself included, yes) will watch. And yes, Cord and others make a living off of it.
The most terrible thing about this isn't the marriage of our culture and Chris Crocker's peculiar need to act out his obsessions, it's that this will encourage more and more emotionally disturbed people on Youtube to let fly with their bizarre and ultimately boring issues in the hope that they'll be able to be ridiculed by the entire country for fun and profit. Youtube is proving Warhol absolutely correct in the worst possible way.
Select replace all for Chris Crocker, insert Perez Hilton and it reads even better (minus the homeschooling).
