Will Smith, Hollywood's most innocuous black male, has effectively destroyed all presumptions about his boring nature with some new comments regarding Adolf Hitler.
Smith told a Scottish paper that Hitler "didn't wake up going, 'Let me do the most evil thing I can do today.' … I think he woke up in the morning and using a twisted, backwards logic, he set out to do what he thought was 'good.'"
Jiggy!
We don't think Smith is necessarily wrong, but some people find Hitler, say, controversial (and by "some people," we mean many, many people, especially Jewish leaders).
The Jewish Defense League is calling on Barack Obama to repudiate Smith's comments, and wants theaters to pull Smith's new flick "I Am Legend" from their screens.
Smith's words, say the JDL, "spit on the memory of every person murdered by the Nazis. His disgusting words stick a knife in the backs of every veteran who fought (and sometimes died) to save the world from the intentions of Adolf Hitler."
That's not really true, but we think we know why you're upset.
[Source]

Why does Barack Obama have to repudiate Smith's statements? We don't ask the JDL to apologize for Zac Efron's movies.
Are we really so bored by spending time with our unholy families over the holidays that we're gonna make up controversy out of thin air? What is so horrible about what Will said? He spoke the truth…people who do absoulute evil, like Hitler, George W., Dickless Cheney, General Betray-us…they all think they're doing God's work. That's all Will said…get over it Barack Hussein Obama, you unelectable loser! Maria, if he did repuidate Smith's comments, Barack is a bigger pussy than I imagined.
Happy new year everyone!
Do we still believe in villians who laugh maniacally while petting their cats? I cannot stand when people try to police everything that is said in public. Isn't that kind of environment- where we have to be afraid of someone turning us in and blacklisting us for expressing ourselves-that can lead to disasters such as nazism? Smith didn't say that Hitler's ideas were lovely or that the holocaust did not exist. All he said was that he believed Hitler rationalized what he did somehow. That seems pretty reasonable. Will Smith has a right to say what he said and the Jewish Defense League has a right to flip out, but Barack Obama has nothing to do with this.
Oh…how racist of the JDL to ask Barack to repudiate Will's comments…why single out the only black candidate to repudiate a black movie star's (true) words? The JDL must be a completely racist, pro-slavery organization! I'm calling on Barbara Streisand to repudiate the JDL, stat!
you have got to be fucking kidding me.
As someone who is Jewish, this sort of bothers me, but sort of doesn't. To say that anything Hitler did was good (to himself or whoever) is like a slap in the face to many Jewish people. At the same time, it sort of makes sense in that it does humanize what Hitler did. Of course, then you have to consider if Hitler deserves that sort of treatment. Does he deserve to be considered in any positive light? Obviously, I don't think so. But to say that he "spit on the memory of every person murdered by the Nazis" is a bit over the top and dramatic, dontcha think?
Of course, we're nothing if not dramatic. But seriously? This shouldn't even be an issue. It's not as though he was condoning the Holocaust or Hitler's actions. Crazy and evil people are crazy for a reason. They do things and act a way that's outside the norm, but it makes sense to them somehow. What's most frightening to me isn't Hitler himself but his followers. People who aren't "crazy" or "evil" but became that way because of one man's words and actions.
I didn't even know there was a Jewish Defense League. I wonder if any of them go to my temple…
yawn
Why are the Jewish Defense League acting so defensive about Hitler? Maybe because that is what they do.
Why is Will Smith giving his opinion on Hitler now?
I'm fucked if I know. Unless he is going to play Hitler in his next movie. Hey look guys Hitler was just a crazy mixed up black guy who just wanted to do good be loved by everyone except the JDL & holocaust survivors….a bit like Will Smith.
"What’s most frightening to me isn’t Hitler himself but his followers. People who aren’t “crazy” or “evil” but became that way because of one man’s words and actions."
This is what scares me most. When responsibility is diffused, such as in a firing squad, people are more likely to do evil, harmful things. If many people are taking part in something and some people feel they have no control over the matter, they start to rationalize whatever it is they are doing.
I don't think he was saying Hitler did something good. Hitler just thought he was doing good. Wasn't it thought to be the "final solution"? The thought of an entire population jumping on his bandwagon makes me feel sick…because it can happen again.
Maybe Will was just offering the Klan a Christmas present with his controversial comments. After all it is the season of good Will.
Exactly LH! Those people who are "free thinkers" but let themselves become controlled by an alpha dog type are the most terrifying. They just follow and do someone's evil bidding because it's what everyone else is doing. Is it right? Who cares! It's right now.
Evil becomes rationalized and innocent people lose their lives because so many beings in this world are desperate to not use the minds given to them. It's easier to follow a "leader" then think for yourself.
Even with the gossip blogs. So many young minds are quick to jump on the bandwagon of hate toward any celeb their favorite blogger deems worthy of scorn each day. Obviously, it's on a much smaller, safer scale, but it's the same idea. It just shows that someone like Hitler can be powerful again some day, and that's some scary shit.
Society is so retarded.
Hitler did not do it alone - The US sat back and did nothing for a long time, and yes, Hitler thought he was doing "good", just as Bush thinks he is doing "good". Bush and Hitler are no different, neither is Saddam, there have been shit rulers since the beginning of time - Stalin, etc, - and they weren't doing it to win any fucking merit badges, just like Bush's reasonings for committing evil. The Jew "League" needs to calm down and get a life. Nothing detrimental to them was even implied. Plenty of other causes need their attention, but oh no. Puhlease.
Nobody, not even will smith, said that hitler did good work. Lame. And the Holocaust is still going on against animals: dogs, cats, cows, pigs….. and it is still going on in Africa today! People don't care about it, truly, at all.
^
huh?
Studies have shown that nearly all people will abandon their morals to satisfy the wishes of a person of higher power. (Stanley Milgram organized an extremely controversial experiment that demonstrates this. Solomon Asch did another famous conformity experiment in 1951.)
Anyhow, Hitler was an oppurtunist, but I would not say that he thought what he was doing was morally acceptable, but that it would benifit his society economically and socially. He may credit himself with uniting the German people, but he had to know that he was doing this by abominable means.
By the way, is he using this Hitler quote to explain that he is good, but is using twisted, backwards logic and that's why he is a Scientoligist?
Did Mollygood or any of you care to research the JDL? They are NOT Jewish leaders. The Anti-Defamation League is a Jewish advocacy group. The JDL is a HATE GROUP. They have murdered an innocent Arab-American civil rights leader and attempted to murder an Arab-American congressman from California (Issa). Do your frickin research. Associating the ADL with the JDL is akin to lumping Protestant Christians with the Christian Identity skinheads.
I believe it ana…
and ilnazhad - you are right. He did think he was "cleansing" society, the same as the kkk thinks here. in that way, he thought he was making his nation "better". Sick, but true.
and maria, do you even look at what goes on in the world other than what you are told? check out africa, for starters…. genocide & more are going on.
Okay, because I'm obedient I did what ana told me to do and looked up the JDL. The do, in fact, seem scary, mostly because they have one of those really bad websites that you just know is run by some redneck who considers himself a webdesigner…anywho. This was the title of the Will Smith story and sorry, it made me laugh:
Will Smith: Hitler Was Basically Good
Is he a Jew-hater or just a dumb actor?
I'm gonna go find out how they handled the Mel Gibson thing…can't really go either/or with him.
Never mind then, I hope none of them go to my temple.
… I think he woke up in the morning and using a twisted, backwards logic, he set out to do what he thought was ‘good.’”….
How is this controversial? Because it was said by a Black man, give me a break. Will didn't agree with the twisted logic of Hitler, he simply gave his opinion on him… and opinions are like assholes, everyones got one, some just smell more than others.
This is dumb! OK everyone play the race card while you hide behind your stupid screen names.
E.M. Grant, what the hell are you talking about? i haven't seen any race cards lately.
So a criminal gang of murderers is criticizing Smith for words? That's rich.
Ana, that actually changes a lot. Thanks.
So what Will was basically saying is that we are all basically good? thank fuck for that cos I was going to say his new movie, I am Legend, is crap, but using some kind of twisted logic…it is basically good crap.
and maria, do you even look at what goes on in the world other than what you are told? check out africa, for starters…. genocide & more are going on.
STFU and get back to work, I was questioning your lumping dogs and cats and pigs into the same category as people. I was just calling you out on your troll like post. So simmer down.
Maria, maybe s/he was just demonstrating the use of "twisted, backwards logic" for us all.
I think the main parallel between genocide and the eating of meat is that few people even question, let alone stand up to, the killing of animals for the passing pleasure of those who consume their end-products. I'm not going to categorically condemn the eating of meat or wearing of leather, but don't you think that more people should think about the issue instead of being complacent, or, perhaps worse, totally writing off the possibility that animals have a right to life?
chela47
I think that there are a lot of people in the U.S. (according to statistics) that approve of the death penalty, under certain circumstances. However, not one of those individuals, (I hope) would say that a genocide is ever right. And with the choice of eating meat vs. the notion that animals have a right to life; I eat meat, but in certain circumstances I feel that animals should have the right to life. These choices are very personal and are at the core of ethical desicions we all make. Pro-life, pro-choice, vegan, meat-eater, ethanization, no-kill shelter etc. I wouldn't change my ethos, though, on the notion that a human life is always more valuable than that of an animal. That is a personal choice.
I apologize to eeks for taking the insult personaly, maybe I'm the one who should be getting back to work. ciao.
Just because two things both happen to have a right to life, does not mean they are equivalent.
Ingrid Newkirk and PETA euthanize thousands of animals each year, because they are sick with expensive but treatable illnesses or are unable to find a home, or are undernourished and underweight. If it is too expensive to treat a very sick animal, most loving and caring people, as well as PETA, will agree that it is humane to put it to sleep in the proper manner. These are, for most people, not the standards they would use in dealing with other humans. PETA stands behind euthanizing sick animals with no homes, but very few people would support euthanizing sick people with no homes.
What I'm getting at here, is that the comparison between the Holocaust, genocides in Africa, and the meat industry is deeply flawed, and that those who can't see the differences between the moral duties owed to humans, and those owed to animals, have to ask themselves some questions as well. Drawing superficial equivalencies simplifies both issues, and I'm not surprised people would take offense to that.
Maria…I am sure that if Eeks knew that you got a yellow vaccuum cleaner for a Christmas present she would understand and forgive your anger….is'nt that right EEks?
wait a minute. what part of this am i not getting. will smilth calls hitler crazy, and some how that's a controversy?
obviously the white racist b'tard is afraid of obama.
if anything obama should put his foot so far up that white racists ass hole, until that mother f*cker can tastes shoelace.
Will has stated that he was misquoted on this and that he thinks Hitler was really horrid.
I still think I am Legend is crap.
"servious" Will Lover? I call shenanigans, sounds like a whore service to me.
I don't get why everyone's all riled up. Will Smith did not say that Hitler did good work. He said Hitler did what HITLER THOUGHT WAS GOOD WORK. How does saying this means that Will Smith thinks it was good work too? Stupid.
I think Will was right, and that it's obvious Hitler thought he was doing a good thing. Otherwise why would he do what he did? He thought it was good, according to his own internal opinion of what is "good". It just so happens, however that his opinion of what was "good" is my opinion and most people's opinion of what is "evil" and "twisted" and "demonic".
Hi again,
I don't check this site often enough, so this comes a bit late, but I wanted to repond to Maria and Janice. You say that genocide is considered universally reprehensible, and this is hopefully the case in the US of today, but, a la the Will Smith/Hitler comment, I'd argue that most people in the communities that perpetrate genocide do not think their actions are horrific; the victimized group is the other, less than human, and so killing them is justifiable - in an entirely different class than murdering someone in the in-group. And don't you think this is somewhat similar to the mentality supporting the killing of animals? It's about rationalizing, distancing onself from the victim, drawing strict lines between different sorts of lives.
G.Bush has killled a million or more iraqis with his lies, backed up be jew neo cons, think the jdlwill ask for an apology from g.bush ffor whathe did?
Also, hitler and his mob claim jews push racial mixing onto others, and take over othr peoples countries and races, obviously this is incorrect.
Right?
k.sorbat, huh?
