Sorta kinda racist, but I use the word all the time to describe the utterly witless morons that live in counties where I absolutely refused to look at houses.

See now white trash is extraordinarily racists. Much along the lines of male slut. White trash, as opposed to just plain old trash implies that trash does not normally apply to white people.

Personally I think redneck can apply to any person of any color, creed, or regional background.

So now white trash is racist against other ethnicities because by disparaging a Caucasian person by calling them white trash it is implying that trash is normally a different race? I think we are really stretching for reasons to feel righteously indignant. White trash is absolutely a derogatory term but if it is to be labeled racist I really feel it would be against Caucasians and not every other race on the planet but the one actually being disparaged.

poor whitney. i know she didn't sign up for a race debate when she was writing this. i'm a white person from the south and i do not find redneck offensive. when i hear redneck i think of a person who says "fer" instead of "for". they also have a mangy dog and a car that doesn't work in their front yard. this person could be any color. this person is a redneck because they take pride in being ignorant. this person likes the fact that they are called a redneck.

its an insult to that person to call them trash.. but why specify the white? What in white trash is racist to whites? If someone called me white trash they would be a) stating the obvious and b) calling me trash. White trash does not disparage white people - i mean unless that statement actually means white people are trash because they are white. However having to precede trash with white because the person is white, yea i think that implies that trash is automatically assumed to be not white.

when you call a guy a male slut you imply that a slut is a woman unless otherwise preceded with male. I apply the same to white trash.

I said "if" it were to be labeled racist. I don't feel that it should be labeled racist. Not towards any race. I would be more likely to label it as elitist or classist because more often than not it is used in reference to those of low socioeconomic standing. I'm not spoiling for a fight or looking to offend anyone that is just my opinion, for what it is worth, which might be nothing.

This thread is getting a little heated but I just figured I would throw in my two cents–if you get digital pics developed from WalMart, you bring your memory card in, stick it into the computer, select the pics you want from the computer, then WalMart does the printing for you in about an hour. They're cheap and pretty good quality.
HOWEVER–if I was a (quasi)celebrity/romantic interest of a celebrity, I would NOT bring pictures of that celebrity, pornographic or not, to a WalMart. Okay, end of my two cents.

Sarah I see your point. Sorry to you and April if I came off bitchy, I didn't really mean to. Different terms affect different people in different ways. I can admit that I'm not the best judge of that because very few terms offend me even the dreaded "C" word that gets most woman so heated.

oilybohunk, (I love writing that) I do agree that it (redneck) is mostly a classist term. They etymology of the word is that it was originally used to refer to white people of lower socio-economic status who did manual labour in the sun for a living, thereby sunburning their necks. I don't think the issue there is that they're white, it's that they're poor.

The whole white trash debate, however, I'm undecided on. April, you make some good points. Oilybohunk, I see where you're coming from. Let's meet in the middle for some marshmallow sandwiches and Mountain Dew.

Is it really possible for me, as a white person, to be racist when I'm calling other white people rednecks? Perhaps it's just around here that we only call white people rednecks, I don't know. Anyway, I'm not disparaging them for their color, obviously. Many of them use the term to decribe themselves with pride. I would define a redneck as willfully uneducated. Someone who would put themselves into debt to score Nascar tickets. Their favorite forms of entertainment are wrestling, racing, monster truck rallies, and pop country. They hate books. These are my own observations, and since I have a strong distaste for this kind of person it's only derogatory because I don't like those personality traits. Since they like themselves, to them redneck is not a bad word. It's all subjective.

Maybe we should just start saying black trash, Indian trash, Asian trash, Mexican trash, and Eskimo trash *coughsarahpalin* to make white trash feel better?

Man, I don't know why everyone wants to take pictures of that stuff. My sister in-law's brother and his wife took photos of the birth of their daughter and all that shit and then SENT it to us! AAAAHHHHH! Why would you let your husband send pictures of you butt naked to his own father. It's so weird. Oh and they live in Europe by the way so none of this redneckery business.

I think a lot of people do that when they have a baby no matter what "race" you are. If you want to take photos of the miracle of birth and the miracle of breastfeeding, then keep those photos PRIVATE and don't share them with me.

I have tons of breastfeeding pictures but I don't send them to people. I have professional shots done (my husband is a photographer) in their albums, but not on the walls. I don't think it's weird to take pictures of such a bonding moment. Anyone's welcome to look at my albums when they visit.
